A new leafcutter bee species of the genus Megachile Latreille with dark black female (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Megachilidae) from Anguilla Bank, Lesser Antilles
  • Mar 27, 2026
  • Insecta Mundi
  • Julio A Genaro

A new species of Megachile Latreille, subgenus Pseudocentron Mitchell (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Megachilidae) is described, exhibiting marked sexual dimorphism: Megachile karlquesteli new species. Only about five species of Megachile whose females have a dark black integument and predominantly black pubescence occur in the Antilles. A distinctive combination of morphological characters separates this species from other taxa. Female is characterized by a dark black tegument and pubescence, while the male possesses a dark brown tegument, darker on the metasoma, except for the tarsi and most of the foreleg, which are reddish-brown; yellow pubescence covers the frons, mesosoma, T1, and T2. The most pronounced differences, however, occur in the males, in which the structure of the apical sterna, particularly sterna 5, 6, and 8, provides reliable diagnostic features. The new species inhabits the Anguilla Bank in the Caribbean Sea. The bee was observed visiting a variety of flowers: Acanthaceae: Asystasia gangetica (L.) T. Anderson; Asteraceae: Borrichia arborescens (L.) DC., Tridax procumbens L.; Aizoaceae: Trianthema portulacastrum L.; Euphorbiaceae: Euphorbia milii Des Moul.; Goodeniaceae: Scaevola plumieri (L.) Vahl; Malvaceae: Waltheria indica L., Corchorus hirsutus L., Melochia tomentosa L.; Polygonaceae: Antigonon leptopus Hook. & Arn.; Zygophyllaceae: Guaiacum officinale L.

Te records represent an extension of previ¬ous host studies by Kurczewski and various co-authors. New genus and/or species host records are given for the genera and subgenera Calopompilus Ashmead, Pepsis Fabricius, Hemipepsis Dahlbom, Priocnessus Banks, Entypus Dahlbom, Cryptocheilus Panzer, Priocnemissus Haupt, Caliadurgus Pate, Dipogon Fox, Phanagenia Banks, Auplopus Spinola, Ageniella Banks, Aporus Spinola, Episyron Schiødte, Poecilopompilus Ashmead, Tachypompilus Ashmead, Arachnophroctonus Howard, Pompilinus Ashmead, Arachnospila Kincaid, and Al¬lochares Banks. New host spider families are introduced for Pepsis equestris Erichson (Pycnothelidae), Pepsis mexicana Lucas (Ctenidae), Pepsis cyanescens Lepeletier (Ctenidae), Pepsis lepida Mocsary (Teraphosidae), Priocnessus prominens (Banks) (Teraphosidae), Entypus unifasciatus cressoni (Banks) (Teraphosidae), Priocnemis (Priocnemissus) nigripes (Cresson) (Antrodiaetidae), Dipogon (Deuteragenia) calipterus (Say) (Salticidae), Dipogon (Deuteragenia) sayi Banks (Trachelidae), Auplopus mellipes mellipes (Say) (Dysderidae), Ageniella (Ageniella) accepta (Cresson) species group (Corinnidae), Ageniella (Ageniella) evansi Townes (Zo-ropsidae), Ageniella (Leucophrus) reynoldsi (Banks) (Salticidae), Ageniella (Priophanes) sp. (Gnaphosidae), Aporus (Aporus) niger (Cresson) (Antrodiaetidae), Episyron conterminus Smith (Nephilidae), Tachypompilus ferrugineus (Say) (Salticidae). Linyphiidae and Philodromidae are new host families for Caliadurgus fasciatel¬lus (Spinola) in North America. Entychides Simon (Euctenizidae) is a new host genus for species in the family Pompilidae. Latrodectus mactans (Fabricius) (Teridiidae) is reported herein for an extremely rare, unidenti¬fed host species of Pompilidae.

Annotated catalogue of fossil Meloidae (Coleoptera: Tenebrionoidea) with discovery of a junior homonym
  • Feb 27, 2026
  • Insecta Mundi
  • Natalie A Saxton + 2 more

Meloidae (Coleoptera: Tenebrionoidea) is a diverse family of Tenebrionoidea that is estimated to be at least 130 million years old. Tere are 16 formally described fossil taxa, with the oldest originating in the mid-Cretaceous. Each formally described fossil species is reviewed here with a nomenclatural history, overview of type material, age, fossil type, and general remarks. We also address several nomenclatural issues. We formally move Zonitis magus (Heyden) new combination from Onitis Fabricius, and provide the replace¬ment name Tremembasis Saxton, Schnepp, and Powell nomen novum for Microbasis Martins-Neto, a junior homonym of Microbasis Dallas (Hemiptera: Coreidae).

Euoniticellus intermedius (Reiche, 1849) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) crossed the Darién? New record for Colombia and South America
  • Feb 27, 2026
  • Insecta Mundi
  • Claudia A Medina-Uribe + 1 more

Te African species Euoniticellus intermedius (Reiche, 1849) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaei¬nae) was introduced to North America in 1974. It was frst introduced in Hawaii and subsequently spread to other locations in the United States, where it rapidly became established. From there, the species naturally colonized Central America and is now considered an invasive species. Here, we report the frst record of this species in South America. Specimens were collected in the Cesar Department of Colombia, manually from cattle dung. We discuss possible routes by which the species may have arrived. Finally, we provide photo¬graphs of the male, female, and male genitalia, along with a map showing collection records from Mexico to Colombia.

  • Insecta Mundi
  • David C Robacker + 1 more

Chrysina karenrobackerae Robacker and Hawks and C. queretaroensis Robacker and Hawks (Cole¬optera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae) are described as new species from the northeastern Mexican states of Nuevo León and Querétaro, respectively, based on morphometric comparisons of adults and genitalia with those of C. adelaida (Hope, 1841) and C. occidentalis Robacker and Hawks, 2022. Both new species were previ¬ously regarded as C. adelaida and remain in the adelaida group (sensu Hawks 2001). Te primary diagnostic characters that defne these species are genitalic, including male-capsule enantiomorphy, a character not previously used in Chrysina Kirby identifcation.
