This article What if Rick Sanchez were real? What if his absolute freedom, indifference to pain, and refusal of relational ties were not narrative exaggerations but extreme manifestations of a subjectivity already at work? This article adopts speculative fiction as a philosophical methodology (Uckelman, 2024) to interpret the animated series Rick and Morty as a critical allegory of radicalized neoliberalism. The central hypothesis is that Rick does not embody a dysfunctional individual, but rather the systemic effect of an ontopolitical regime that dissolves the commons in the name of total autonomy. Structured in four interlinked sections, the article begins with freedom as its foundational axis and explores its consequences: the erosion of social bonds, necropolitics as the management of the disposable, algorithmic technogovernance of experience, and comedy as an anesthetic for collapse. Rather than satire, the series offers a speculative mirror — a philosophical experiment that compels us to confront the implications of freedom detached from recognition of the other. This is not a moralizing reading nor a conventional sociological critique, but a conceptual intervention: Rick and Morty does not project a dystopia — it reconfigures the present. If Rick persists, it is because his logic already inhabits us. And perhaps the most unsettling question is not “What if Rick were real?”, but “What if we already were Rick?”

This article analyzes Érico Veríssimo's novel Incidente em Antares as a strong critique of Brazilian authoritarianism, particularly within the context of the Civil-Military Dictatorship (1964–1985). Using a historical-literary approach, the study contextualizes the novel’s publication during the politically repressive Médici government and explores the surprising fact that the book was released without censorship. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from Sérgio Buarque de Holanda and Lilia Schwarcz, the article examines the structural roots of Brazilian authoritarianism, focusing on patriarchy, coronelismo, and systemic violence. It highlights key characters such as Quitéria Campolargo and Erotildes, representing the oppressive elite and marginalized social groups, respectively. Finally, the article presents an alternative hypothesis for the book’s uncensored release: the possibility that the novel’s ending—where social order is restored and the dead's denunciations are silenced—was perceived by the military authorities as a symbolic validation of their own triumph over subversion. The article argues that Incidente em Antares remains a valuable literary source for understanding historical forms of authoritarianism in Brazil.

Between 1953 and 1956, Erico Verissimo served as Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Pan-American Union, under the Organization of American States (OAS).This experience placed him at the intersection of a complex diplomatic game between the United States and Latin America during the Cold War.This article offers a critical reading of Verissimo's speeches from that period, informed by the concept of ideology developed in A Expresso da Ideologia (Fauri, 2007), to show how the writer articulated a humanistic idealism in tension with Pan-American diplomacy. The analysis argues that by transferring his literary ethics into the political sphere, Verissimo transformed diplomatic discourse into a form of symbolic resistance, mediating between institutional rhetoric and an emancipatory vision of culture and freedom.

Portuguese language is characterized by an optionality between building a clause with a personal pronoun as subject (eu comprei um livro – I bought a book) and building it without pronominal subject (comprei um livro – I bought a book). In the history of Brazilian Portuguese (BP), a typical linguistic change is the progressive increase in the use of the first option, in opposition to the second one. This paper is part of a broader research project whose purpose is to investigate whether such change has been influenced by social factors. In this context, the article aims to analyze if, in BP, in the 19th century, the variation between expression and non-expression of pronominal subjects is influenced by social variables. The analysis addresses the following variables: education, stage of life, social class, gender/sex. The theoretical framework is an articulation among Variationist Sociolinguistics, Historical Sociolinguistics and Functional Discourse Grammar. The paper is based on variationist methodology, and it uses a corpus that is composed of Brazilian theatre plays produced in the 19th century. The results suggest that the variables education and stage of life are relevant: higher levels of education and the second stage of life maintain higher rates of non-expression of subject.

This article has as its main objective to analyze the ways in which coronelismo is represented in the novel Herança de Sangue: um faroeste brasileiro, published in 2012, by the contemporary author Ivan Sant'anna. Therefore, we methodologically base ourselves on bibliographical research regarding the concepts relevant to the research. Thus, the final phase of the research had as its methodology the articulation between theoretical readings and the analysis of the novel. In Herança de Sangue, there is a reconstitution of part of the history of the city of Catalão in Goiás. It is noticed that the coronelismo portrayed in the novel has similarities with what was portrayed in other literary works and that the author deepens in the treatment of these issues, in addition to mentioning aspects concerning coronelismo that are less present in historiography and literature, such as the private life of colonels, their relationship with violence and the existence of outstanding women in the context of coronelismo.
