  • Jan 1, 2026
  • Advances in Building Education
  • M Torres-González + 1 more

  • Jan 1, 2026
  • Advances in Building Education
  • Kattya Vanessa Yaranga + 2 more

Measuring cognitive debt in AI supported education
  • Jan 1, 2026
  • Advances in Building Education
  • A Martínez-Gordon + 2 more

This study examines how generative AI affects research behavior and cognitive engagement in graduate building engineering education using the FOCUS measurement framework. A 23-item “Likert” survey (1–5) was administered to 35 graduate students after completing core-engineering tasks without AI assistance. Responses were normalized and grouped into constructs including automation reliance (R), analytical engagement (AE), knowledge atrophy (KA), hallucination perception (H), perceived benefits (B), preference for specialized tools (SvG), and human oversight endorsement (HE). Results indicate strong perceived timesavings for literature review but limited trust in AI-generated summaries and frequent hallucination perception. Students reported high automation reliance (R = 0.711) alongside substantial verification behavior (AE = 0.693), resulting in moderate cognitive debt (CDI = 0.570) and low-to-moderate automation bias (ABI = 0.219). Human oversight endorsement was high (HE = 0.846), with a clear preference for specialized over generic tools (SvG = 0.658). The findings highlight a trade-off between productivity gains and risks of cognitive erosion in a safety-critical discipline and motivate the adoption of governed educational tools such as a Virtual Course Assistant (VCA) to preserve analytical skills while retaining AI-enabled efficiency.

Effect of L-Shaped Shear Wall Layout on the Seismic Performance of Medium-Rise RC Buildings
  • Jan 1, 2026
  • Advances in Building Education
  • S Merabti + 2 more

This article investigates the influence of shear wall layout on the seismic response of a mid-rise building located in a high seismicity zone (Zone III) using ETABS software. Reinforced concrete L-shaped shear walls, designed to exhibit equivalent stiffness in both principal directions, are analyzed under several layout configurations. A comparative assessment is carried out based on standard global response indicators under lateral loading, including lateral displacements, base shear, overturning moment, and stress levels within the shear walls. The results highlight an overall improvement in seismic performance when the lateral force-resisting system combines a central core with corner-located shear walls, compared to the other configurations examined. In contrast, layouts relying solely on peripheral L-shaped shear walls prove to be less effective. These findings enable the formulation of practical recommendations for optimized seismic design.

  • Aimee Delgado-Cruz + 1 more

This study explored the effectiveness of the Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodology in the Bioclimatic Design course within the Architecture program at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador, Manabí campus. The primary objective was to analyze how the PAR approach—through the construction of a solar protection prototype—enhances student engagement, conceptual understanding, and overall learning outcomes. Findings from a survey conducted with 13 students revealed a strong appreciation for the PAR methodology, particularly in its capacity to foster active participation and deepen conceptual comprehension. A significant majority of students expressed agreement or strong agreement regarding these positive impacts. Regarding the prototype construction, students consistently identified the experience as meaningful, emphasizing its relevance to and reinforcement of theoretical concepts addressed in class. In conclusion, PAR emerges as a valuable pedagogical strategy for teaching bioclimatic design, especially by bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. However, areas for improvement were identified—particularly in collaborative work management and the provision of timely feedback—which suggest promising avenues for further research and refinement of the methodology’s implementation.

Simplifying the Design of a Self-Compacting Concrete
  • Apr 30, 2025
  • Advances in Building Education
  • Roberto Alejandro Rojas-Holden

Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) is obtained with the use of super fluidizing additives, giving the concrete the properties so that it can be placed by simple pouring. In its fresh state it is characterized by a fluid consistency and great resistance to segregation, reducing compaction defects. In the hardened state, SCC can achieve higher mechanical strengths than conventional concrete. These properties are taken into account in specific tests, and there are no standardized SCC designs, but acceptability ranges. In this work, its design is simplified by modifying the ACI 211 method for conventional concrete, considering some fixed values. This was achieved due to that after failed attempts by various teams to find the percentage of additive and coarse aggregate through the data provided by the mini-cone and other rheology methodologies for pastes, the analysis was simplified with excellent results for the dosage of the superplasticizer within the range of the manufacturers to design the SCC.
