Nearly half of American adults have hypertension (HTN), and non-Hispanic Black patients are diagnosed at a higher rate than others. Our local clinic population reflected disproportionate rates of uncontrolled HTN among Black patients. A quality improvement pre-/postintervention design was used to evaluate an educational intervention to reduce blood pressure (BP) and improve self-monitoring of BP in Black patients using the Chronic Care Model. A team-based approach was used to redesign clinic workflows and patient education, prescribe self-paced videos from an electronic health record (EHR) patient portal, and provide home BP cuffs. Black participants (n = 79) improved viewing of prescribed videos (7.9% to 68.5%), knowledge scores (67.9 to 75.2), and mean systolic BP (-20.3 mm Hg; P > .001). This team-based approach enhanced patient engagement, self-monitoring skills, EHR-reported BP, and overall BP control for a cohort of Black patients with uncontrolled BP.

Dashboards visually display quality and safety data to aid nurses in making informed decisions. This systematic review evaluated quality improvement (QI) dashboard characteristics associated with interventions to improve patient outcomes and positive end-user evaluation. Literature was searched from 2012 to 2022 in PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar. Sixteen articles were included. Varied dashboard characteristics were noted, with mixed patient outcomes and end-user responses. Graphs and tabular presentations were associated with improved patient outcomes, whereas graphs were associated with end-user satisfaction. Benchmarks were noted with improved patient outcomes but not end-user satisfaction. Interactive dashboards were important for end users and improved patient outcomes. Nurses can find dashboards helpful in guiding QI projects. Dashboards may include graphs and/or tables, benchmarks, and interactivity but should be useful, usable, and aligned to unit needs. Future research should focus on the use of quality dashboards in nursing practice.

Accurate emergency department (ED) triage in the geriatric population is an important nurse-sensitive quality indicator; however, few quality indicators are verified for impact. To examine the relationship between triage accuracy in adults older than 65 years and Core Measures for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and heart failure (HF). A correlational approach was used to determine strength and direction of the relationship between variables. Strong positive correlations were found between triage accuracy and mortality for AMI and HF, as well as with 30-day hospital readmissions for AMI. A weak negative correlation was found between triage accuracy and 30-day hospital readmissions for HF. Accurate triage can lead to a more effective care trajectory for patients, better adherence to Core Measures, and better outcomes. Accuracy in triage for AMI and HF is a valid indicator of ED quality care.

Missed nursing care (MNC) negatively impacts the quality of patient care. There may be a relationship between the nursing practice environment (NPE) and MNC; however, this relationship has not been examined in developing countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine the relationship between the NPE and MNC during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study of 300 participants was conducted in 4 teaching hospitals in Iran. Data were collected using a demographic and clinical form, the Nursing Professional Practice Environment Questionnaire, and MISSCARE survey and analyzed using structural equation modeling. The hypothesized model was well fit, showing that 1 unit improvement of the NPE domains of patient-centered care, effective leadership, and policy transparency decreased MNC by 0.18, 0.12, and 0.05, respectively. The model confirmed the association between the dimensions of the NPE and MNC. These findings can assist health policymakers and nursing managers in improving the NPE.

Minimizing patient falls and fall-related injuries within organizational constraints is a high priority for nurse leaders. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services do not reimburse hospitals for fall-related expenditures. In-person sitters are used to prevent falls but are resource intensive and costly. Remote patient monitoring (RPM) may offer alternatives to in-person sitters to reduce fall-related harm. The efficacy of RPM to reduce patient falls and fall-related injuries was explored. Electronic health record data were extracted from a 13-hospital integrated health care system. Incidence rate ratios were used to analyze the impact of RPM technology on falls and fall-related injuries. When used in conjunction with standard fall precautions, RPM reduced falls 33.7% and fall-related injuries 47.4%. Fall-related expenditures decreased $304 400 with a combined estimated savings systemwide of $2 089 600 annually. RPM technology minimized falls and associated harm and improved patient safety, positively impacting hospital expenditures.

Registered nurses (RNs) are attuned to health care quality and safety concerns but may lack competency in quality improvement (QI) to advance care quality. To describe frontline acute care RNs' self-efficacy in QI competencies, evaluate differences based on educational attainment, and evaluate relationships based on years of RN experience. The study used a descriptive, quantitative, correlational, comparative cross-sectional survey design to evaluate RNs' self-efficacy in QI competency using the 2021 American Association of Colleges of Nursing The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education. Frontline RNs' overall QI self-efficacy showed variability in knowledge, skills, and attitudes, with no relationship between self-efficacy and years of RN experience, nor difference based on educational attainment. Insufficient self-efficacy signals the need for further QI focus in nursing education, nursing practice, and health care policy to harness RNs' ability to advance care outcomes.
