Abstract

ZONE-PLAN is an interactive planning tool and one of the products created for the Facility Planning Office (FPO) of NASA's Lewis Research Center in a study conducted from August 1989 through March 1990. This project, titled “DEVELOPMENT OF AN OFFICE/LAB SPACE ALLOCATION PLAN”, addressed the problems of office/laboratory space utilization and of appropriate distribution of the limited space in the 100 plus facilities, to nearly 4500 employees of NASA's Lewis Research Center (LeRC), in Cleveland Ohio. This paper illustrates how Industrial Engineering principles coupled with special purpose microcomputer programming can be employed to develop a unique intermediate and operational level planning system for the distribution of scarce resources.
