Abstract
Adopting a historical approach, this essay uses the concept of Red Star to examine the construction of the star in Chinese socialist cinema. Through a case study of Zhang Ruifang, this essay argues that a theoretical paradigm of modelling is crucial to comprehending the Red Star, one who embodies the ideal socialist person both on screen and off screen. As Zhang Ruifang's film stardom illustrates, the Red Star served as a model for the masses and was subject to remodelling by the socialist ideology.
