Abstract

The study investigated relationships among hypothesized contributors to a differentiated concept of self in 69 kindergarten children: articulation of body concept, affect awareness, and the tendency for make-believe play. A principal component procedure located three unrotated factors. All three self-aware measures load moderately well on a first factor. A child who codes one aspect of his inner experience, such as his body concept, also codes affect and fantasy.
