Abstract

Yellow fever can cause an acute, potentially fatal, viral haemorrhagic fever and is prevalent (endemic) in tropical areas of Africa and Central and South America. Avoidance of mosquito bites is advised for anyone living in or travelling to risk areas. However, the World Health Organization advises that yellow fever vaccination is the most important way of preventing yellow fever. Yellow fever risk is dynamic and recommendations can change rapidly. Health workers advising travellers must ensure they are familiar with appropriate sources of information in order to stay up to date.
