Abstract
In this study sol-gel method is used to produce ternary zinc aluminum phosphate glasses (P2O5-Al2O3-ZnO) doped with varying amount of rare earth oxide (Yb2O3). The physical properties, thermal properties, optical properties, and structure of these glasses were determined and studied. Results showed that for ZnO and Zn (NO3)2 series glasses: softening temperature (Td) was at 570°C, transition temperature (Tg) was below 500°C, thermal expansion coefficient (α) was 8.64~3.65×10^(-6)/°C(100-300°C), and dissolution rate of water (H2O 90°C 1days, wt% loss) was 5.2×10^(-8)g/cm^2 *min. The refractive index and glass density increased with an increase of rare earth oxides (Yb2O3).This study used Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy to analyze the bonding structure. For phosphate glasses, as Al2O3 content increases, Al^3+ ions becomes part of the four-way coordination body of the glass network and constitutes an Al-O-P bond.
