Abstract

Up to this point, the discussion has been concerned with the energy states and spectra of the most weakly bound electrons. In the lighter atoms, these are usually the outermost or valence electrons. If we now turn to x-ray spectra, we shah be concerned with the energy states of electrons in inner shehs. We shall see, however, that x-ray spectra can for the most part be treated as one-electron spectra, although they belong to many- electron atoms.
