In China, as in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, economic reform initiatives seek to increase productivity by introducing elements of market-oriented policies and institutions into an economy formerly dominated by state planning. Efforts to evaluate the impact of reform of Chinese industry have focused on the measurement of productivity change in state enterprises. This study expands the prior framework of analysis in several directions. Our investigation of productivity trends is not limited to state enterprises but includes quantitative comparisons with China's fast-growing collective industries, which contributed 36% of overall industrial output in 1988.1 Unlike previous studies, our analysis works with gross rather than net output. This permits us to investigate changes in the productivity of intermediate inputs, which occupy a large portion of total costs in Chinese industry, as well as labor and capital. To do this, we develop a "quasi-frontier" estimation procedure which seems appropriate for comparisons of total factor productivity based on Chinese industrial data. Finally, we offer a quantitative perspective on the extent to which reform efforts have moved industrial resource allocation toward patterns expected of a market system. The analysis confirms our previous finding, based on a restricted framework employing only labor, fixed capital, and net output, that multifactor productivity in state industry has risen substantially during

Depletion, technology, and productivity growth in the metallic minerals industry
  • Nov 12, 2018
  • Mineral Economics
  • Sam Mitra

Technological advancements dictate the productivity growth in all industries, including extractive ones. In the peculiar case of metallic mineral industries, this growth is also impacted by the natural variation in the metal content and chemical composition of the ore input, in the course of cumulative extraction and depletion of resources. Through a disaggregated treatment of productivity data achieved by using the input-output data on subprocesses of copper production and correlating them with input characteristics (ore grade), this study identifies and evaluates the impacts of the periodic changes in the natural input, as well as those of the technological progress, while reasonably controlling the influence of the other unrelated factors. This provides an objective assessment of the manner and extent of mitigation of the impact of the depletion-driven changes in the natural inputs of the said industry, through technological advancements. It reveals that the continuous and incremental developments in technology, successfully offset the detrimental effects of depletion on the copper sector productivity, often aided by the geological characteristics that changed to the miners’ advantage. However, the impact of depletion stands to outweigh the gains from innovative technologies, as soon as the ores breach a minimum threshold level of purity or chemistry. This study thus establishes the usefulness of productivity studies in estimating the impacts of depletion that may not proceed in strictly sequential and uni-directional manner. More importantly, it shows that the impacts are neither uniform nor linear and are not always detrimental to productivity growth. Though the study is primarily based on copper industry, the findings hold relevance for other metal industries too.

Fifty years of research on takeover target prediction: a historical perspective
  • Jun 9, 2021
  • Qualitative Research in Financial Markets
  • Abongeh Tunyi

PurposeThis paper aims to review prior studies and presents a synthesis of the takeover prediction literature spanning the period 1968–2018.Design/methodology/approachThe paper adopts a narrative review approach. It explores prior studies on takeover target prediction from a historical perspective, focusing on the evolution and development of the literature over the 50-year period.FindingsFrom a historical development perspective, prior studies in the area can be partitioned into four distinct eras. Studies in the first era (1968–1985) mainly established that takeover targets share common characteristics which can be captured with financial ratios. Studies in the second era (1986–2002) developed and extended formal target prediction hypotheses. These studies concluded that it was impossible to build a successful investment strategy around takeover target prediction. Studies in the third era (2003–2009) explored similar questions using alternative modelling techniques but arrive at similar results – targets can be predicted with limited accuracy and target prediction is unlikely to lead to abnormal returns. Studies in the fourth era (2010–2018) explore implications of M&A predictability on share valuation, governance and bond prices (amongst others), but most importantly, provide some evidence that takeover prediction can lead to abnormal returns when combined with appropriate screening strategies.Originality/valueThis presents the first in-depth review of the literature on takeover target prediction. It highlights the development of the literature over four distinct eras and identifies several limitations, research gaps and opportunities for future research. Given the recent decline in the literature (i.e. fourth era), this study may stimulate new research in the area.

Industrialization as a Historical Phenomenon
  • Nov 24, 1994
  • Arnulf Grübler

is shown as a time-specific and spatially heterogeneous process. The description of industrialization uses two concepts along a functional/temporal and a spatial dimension: Technology clusters, i.e., a set of interrelated technological, institutional and social innovations, drive particular (historical) periods of industrial output and productivity growth. A spatial taxonomy reflects the different degrees of development and intensiveness of industrialization among core, rim, and periphery. In an inductive approach, industrial growth is described through the prism of changes in technology clusters and the spatially heterogeneous diffusion of industrialization on a global scale. Industrialization paths are discussed on the basis of the USA, Western Europe, Russia and Japan. The quantitative description focuses on macro-level indicators of industrial output, and the evolution of the productivity of factor inputs labor and energy. Energy intensiveness and carbon emissions are used as metric to assess changes in the environmental impacts of various industrialization paths, concluding that improvements in the efficiency of factor input use are part of the inherent incentive structure of industrial evolution. However, historical improvement rates will have to be considerably accelerated to lower absolute levels of industrial emissions. Finally, the implications of industrial productivity growth and its distribution in the form of rising incomes (consumption) and free time (leisure) are discussed inter alia from an environmental perspective.
