Abstract

Owl monkeys were subjected to xenon photocoagulation, and the effect on the retinal vasculature was studied clinically and pathologically. Photocoagulation of moderate intensity produces lesions confined to the capillaries in the immediate areas of treatment. More intense photocoagulation sufficient to produce a large full-thickness retinal lesion with atrophy of the inner retinal layers distally and optic atrophy centrally affects the vasculature peripheral to the area of treatment and involves larger vessels as well as capillaries.
