Abstract

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism has been studied on the crystalline and amorphous 80at%Fe-R(R=Sm,Gd,Tb and Dy) alloys. The dichroic spectrum at the Fe K-edge suggests that Fe 4p-bands hybridize with unoccupied bands of rare-earth. The intensity ratio between the XMCD spectra at the R L2- and L3-edges deviates from the ratio 1:-1 theoretically expected, which indicates a non-vanishing orbital angular momentum.
