Written corrective feedback at university
This study explores the written corrective feedback provided by two university teachers in the academic texts written by their students. Specifically, it focuses on the relationship established between the linguistic and discursive errors identified by the teachers, the forms of feedback provided (direct, indirect, metalinguistic and metadiscursive) and the impact of feedback on a second version of the texts revised by the students. A total of 142 texts (two versions of 71 texts) submitted by two groups of students taking a primary education degree at two Spanish universities (71 students) were analyzed. These were coded according to the errors detected, the form of feedback provided, and the way in which they incorporated the feedback into a second version. The results show that the errors detected in the highest numbers by the teachers were discursive, followed by morpho-syntactic and spelling mistakes. The most common feedback was indirect, followed by metalinguistic, although the two teachers were found to take distinct approaches. Regarding its impact, the students incorporated a high percentage (80%) of the feedback provided.

INTRODUCTION. The assessment of digital, pedagogical and disciplinary skills of teachers through the TPACK model has a wide international acceptance (Jordan y Dinh, 2012; Koh, Chai y Tsai, 2013). METHOD. In this work, we assess the perceptions of students who are completing their Degree in Primary Education at different Spanish universities about their competence, using the questionnaire designed by Schmidt et al (2009) and Cabero (2014), based on the TPACK model. Furthermore, we analyse the relations between the level of skills and the general academic achievement of students completing this Bachelor Degree as well as the impact of taking ICT-related subjects. RESULTS. The pre-service teachers perceive better results in the Pedagogical Knowledge dimension (PK), Technological Pedagogical Knowledge dimension (TPK) and Content Knowledge in Literacy sub-dimension (CK-Lec). However, their skills in the Content Knowledge in Mathematics dimension (CK-Mat) and Technological Knowledge dimension (TK) seem to be more limited. The graduates´ perceived skills level is related to their general academic achievement. What is more, students who took a ICT-related subject about in their university curriculum consider themselves better equipped in some dimensions of the TPACK model (Technological Content Knowledge, Technological Pedagogical Knowledge and Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge). DISCUSSION . The current university curricula of the Bachelor Degree in Primary Education are providing future teachers with a sufficient level of professional skills (based on TPACK model). However, there is a great scope for improvement that should be addressed by the universities, especially when the curricula do not contemplate the offering of specific subjects on digital technologies.

This research explores the perception of university students of Degrees in Education towards gamification mediated by Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) as an innovative teaching strategy, aligned with the principles of educational quality of the UN Agenda 2030. A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional and inferential research has been carried out, based on the survey technique. The research was carried out using the population of students in the first year of the Degrees in Early Childhood, Primary and Social Education at the University of Jaén during the 2022-23 academic year (n=521). A questionnaire was used as a research tool. The data collected were analyzed using the SPSS programme, carrying out descriptive statistical analysis, comparison of means and regression analysis. The results reflect a positive receptiveness on the part of the students towards ICT-supported gamification, considering it fun and dynamic. This strategy is widely known by students, which favors its implementation in the university environment. Specifically, quiz games and classroom management games stand out as the best-known ICT-supported gamification strategies. However, students of the Degree in Primary Education show greater knowledge compared to those of Pre-school Education; likewise, those who plan to use gamification in their future professional practice express more favourable evaluations. Gamification is considered an active and innovative methodology being a key element for quality improvement in Higher Education.

This paper analyzed the relationship that certain demographic and educational variables might have on the training in environmental education (EE) received by undergraduate students enrolled in a Degree in Primary Education (DPE) at two Spanish universities. For this purpose, they were given a questionnaire to assess the link between certain personal and educational characteristics relating to the students in the sample (n = 274) and three components of an environmental competence (EC) model: environmental knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. The results indicate that variables like gender, the students’ habitual place of residence, the type of leisure activities they undertook, and some educational factors had a significant impact on the acquisition of the said competencies. In light of these outcomes, the paper reflects on the possible role that non-university contexts might play in environmental education for pre-service teachers.

Within the framework of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, four case studies of the degree in Primary Education at three Spanish universities are analyzed. The aim is to study the suitability of three different active teaching-learning strategies: problem-based learning (PBL), project-oriented learning (POL), and a cross-disciplinary workshop. Another goal is to promote the integration of education for sustainable development (ESD) and measure the level of acquisition of several competencies of sustainability and the change in consumption habits of future teachers after implementing those pedagogical approaches. Initial and final ecological footprint (EF) as well as a rubric to measure the level of acquisition of competencies of sustainability were used as data collection instruments. The conclusions related to the research objectives show that when sustainability is implemented in the curriculum through active teaching-learning strategies, future teachers acquire competencies of sustainability. They also reveal that said strategies contribute to a change in consumption habits as a reduction in the EF is observed. There exists a relation between EF reduction and high levels of acquisition of competency in sustainability.

PurposeIn this paper, the results of an investigation aimed at analysing and comparing the environmental competences of future teachers undergoing training in two universities are presented. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the difference in the acquisition of environmental competences amongst two groups of students enrolled in two universities with different levels of introduction of the environmental education (EE) and sustainability contents in their curriculums. This objective is inserted into a wider finality: to provide recommendations regarding the redesign of pre-service teacher training curricula and learning programmes.Design/methodology/approachA specifically designed questionnaire was used in this study to analyse the environmental competencies of students in the final year of their degree in primary education in two Spanish universities. One of them had a highly environmentally oriented programme, and the other had a scarcely environmentally oriented programme.FindingsResults show that no significant differences were observed in the results related to the greening level of the training programmes. Pre-service teachers have insufficient environmental knowledge, but with quite positive, responsible attitudes towards environmental issues, and pro-environmental actions that could be categorised as moderate. Results point to the need for further and better pre-service teacher training in environmental issues.Originality/valueOne of the main factors in the appropriate treatment of EE in schools is teacher training. Despite this principle being widely recognised, not all pre-service teacher training programmes adequately address EE. The added value of this paper is the comparison established between the students that followed a degree with a high impact of the environmental competences in its curriculum and another one that has very few references to these competences in the curriculum.

This goal of this research was to find out the extent and type of engagement, motivation, stress, coping strategies and academic performance in students undertaking teacher training degrees (early childhood education, primary education and double degrees) with a view to establishing relationships between these variables and designing proposals to improve and complement tutorial plans for these programmes. This was a cross-cutting, prospective, exploratory study that combined descriptive and correlational methodologies by means of questionnaires. The sample consisted of 610 students undertaking the early childhood education degree, primary education degree or double degree at the UB. The results indicate a moderate degree of academic engagement. Among the variables involved, the highest scores were obtained for academic engagement, achievement goals and, as a hindering variable, psychological distress. Academic performance (average grade) and the subscales of vigour, dedication and absorption (as facilitating variables) were identified as being involved in the development and maintenance of academic engagement. It is hoped that this research will serve to disseminate data relevant to tutorial action plans for teacher training degrees among the scientific community and, consequently, to improve the academic engagement of these students. Keywords: academic engagement, academic achievement, teacher training, tutorial action plan, academic motivation, coping strategies

Humankind is faced with major global challenges to ensure the future of our planet. Target 4.7 of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (quality education) of the 2030 Agenda establishes the importance of ensuring that all learners acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to promote sustainable development through education for sustainable development, human rights, gender equality, and global citizenship, amongst others. The research presented in this article is based on an exploratory study on the views of a group of university teachers from the area of Didactics of Mathematics in the Faculty of Education Sciences at Universidad de Cádiz with regard to Education for Sustainability and its integration in the field of training future teachers in mathematics education. It aims to analyse the perceptions teachers have regarding the subject of study, the work methodologies they use, etc. in greater depth. The authors of the research later interviewed three teachers in the area of Didactics of Mathematics who teach in different education degrees: bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, bachelor’s degree in primary education, and master’s degree in teacher training for compulsory secondary education and baccalaureate. Three instruments were used to collect data: the syllabi of the subjects for which the teachers were responsible, an initial exploratory questionnaire, and a semi-structured personal interview. The instrument employed to analyse the information was the Tool for Methodological Analysis through Sustainability (Herramienta de Análisis Metodológico desde la Sostenibilidad, HAMS in Spanish). The results show the different views and positions the university teachers in the area of Didactics of Mathematics at Universidad de Cádiz have with respect to integrating sustainability into future teachers’ training in mathematics education. It is concluded that the effective integration of sustainability into mathematics education requires university teachers to change and to work together from the same perspective—the one they intend to promote.

The development of professional practices during the university stage is a fundamental factor for quality skills development. For many students, it is the first real experience in a professional context, so continuous monitoring by teachers is necessary. This article presents an innovative proposal to develop the follow-up of the professional practices of the degree in Primary Education, and two Masters’ in Psychopedagogy and Special Educational Needs using a learning management system (LMS) (Blackboard). The experience was developed by a team of teachers from the departments of Didactics and Educational Organization and Research Methods and Educational Diagnosis of the University of Seville (Spain). The aspects to be studied are the development of communication, reflection, and collaborative learning processes during the internship period. After an explicit agreement, 24 students (10 from the course “Professional Practices I” in undergraduate students; and the others from the Master’s) committed to periodically using the blog designed ad hoc for this experience. A content analysis of the speeches posted on the blog was carried out, examining the changes, the advantages, and the disadvantages that this model entailed. It allowed observing similarities and differences between both groups of students. As the main conclusion, there were some differences between the two groups of students, regarding the number, type, and contents of interventions; there were no differences in the assessment of the methodology, all the students thought that it was a very positive assessment of the experience for generating information exchange networks among colleagues and teachers. Finally, the relevance of constant monitoring of the academic tutor was highlighted.

Heritage education is configured as an ideal framework for the treatment of socio-environmental problems relevant to modern society. To this end, it is essential that teachers can develop proposals in the classroom that promote critical thinking and the eco-social education of their students, based on innovative and experiential methodologies. For this reason, initial teacher training must ensure that future teachers acquire these innovative tools. Thus, the aim of this work is to identify the conceptions of student teachers in initial teacher training regarding gamification as a teaching methodology to address controversial heritage. To achieve this, a questionnaire has been designed with questions about heritage, controversy, and educational gamification, which was given to 235 students (M = 60; F = 175) taking their primary education degrees at different Spanish universities. To guide the design of the research instrument and analyze the results, a system of categories was developed and the SPSS data processing program was used. The first results show that, even though students in initial teacher training think that they do have a predisposition to use gamification to work around controversial heritage in class, they lack the knowledge of methodological strategies and gamified educational activities, which suggests a dearth of training on these issues in the primary education degree courses.

Students on the undergraduate degree in Primary Education in Spain took part in this inter-university experience within the subject of Didactics of Musical Expression. Eleven teachers and 307 students from four Spanish universities were involved in the experience, which took place in the academic year 2012–2013. The four universities were the University of the Basque Country, the University of Cantabria, University Jaume I of Castellon and the University of the Balearic Islands. The aim of the experience was to discover the traditional culture in various Spanish regions through an interdisciplinary and creative project. Based on cooperative methodology, each class in the four universities was divided into work groups of five to seven students. Technologies played an essential role in developing and coordinating the experience, as the students were able to interact and learn about the work being carried out in the other universities through virtual platforms and networks. The results of the evaluation process undertaken with the students and teachers showed that the experience had helped them to acquire basic competencies and knowledge about intangible cultural heritage and that it was a source of exchange and enrichment for both students and teachers.
