Abstract

Good documentation provides an excellent return on the investments made in its development. Software sells hardware, and user manual sells software. The key to help beginners use software successfully is high-quality documentation. The tutorial manual for a general software is here considered. The content of the tutorial is organized such that a user is encouraged to gain concrete experience, to reflect his/her observations, to conceptualize and to experiment. Because of generality a certain problem domain cannot be included into the tutorial. Similar reasoning explains our problems with advanced organizers. The complexity of the system underlines an importance of the index. To this end we must evaluate, rethink and tune guidelines presented in the literature for writing tutorial manuals in cases, where the system is as flexible and as sophisticated as, for example, our application generator GENERA.
