Abstract

My first reaction was negative. The approach sounded inimical to what writing was all about-thinking clearly what it is you want to say based on thoughts and feelings and choosing the right rhetorical vehicle to say it, with nary a thought to sentence parsing, transformationally or any other way. But as we talked, I realized we were touching on something that has occupied my thinking for some time: the place of grammar in the teaching of writing. Or, to put it another way, the value of grammatical terminology to the overall learning process of writing. I have no trouble accepting and believing in the close relationship between knowing grammar and knowing how to write.
