This study aims to investigate the psychological effects of Islamic acts of worship i.e., Salah (prayer), Sawm (fasting), Zakat (charity), and Hajj (pilgrimage) on human psychology, especially depression and anxiety disorders. The Islamic spiritual system not only returns human being to Allah but also to a calm heart, stable emotions, and hope. The research identifies that neglect of worship and religious practices creates a spiritual vacuum that manifests itself in terms of psychological disorders such as depression and anxiety. Using the mirror of Qur'anic revelations, Hadiths, and modern psychology, the research can illustrate how Islamic worship provides a natural, harmless, and sustainable solution that has a positive effect on the human soul, mind, and body. Ongoing observation of these habits evokes peacefulness, patience, positivity, balance, and contentment in the character of a person.

This study focused on patients in the general population whose anxiety or depressive disorder is untreated. It explored reasons for not receiving treatment and compared four groups of patients-three that did not receive treatment for different reasons (no problem perceived, no perceived need for care, and unmet need for care) and one that received treatment-regarding their predisposing, enabling, and need factors. Cross-sectional data were used for 743 primary care patients with current anxiety or depressive disorder from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA). Diagnoses were confirmed with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Patients' perception of the presence of a mental problem, perceived need for care, service utilization, and reasons for not receiving treatment were assessed with the Perceived Need for Care Questionnaire. Forty-three percent of the respondents with a six-month anxiety or depression diagnosis did not receive treatment. Twenty-one percent of all respondents with depression or anxiety expressed a need for care but did not receive any. Preferring to manage the problem themselves was the most common reason for respondents to avoid seeking treatment. There were no significant differences in clinical need factors between treated patients and untreated patients with a perceived need for care. Compared with patients in the other two untreated groups, untreated patients with a perceived need for care were more hindered in regard to symptom severity, functional disability, and psychosocial functioning. General practitioners should pay considerable attention to patients whose need for care is unmet. Furthermore, findings support the implementation of patient empowerment in mental health care in order to contribute to easily accessible and patient-centered care.

Rates of Sexual Victimization in Prison for Inmates With and Without Mental Disorders

OBJECTIVE: This study estimated the rates of sexual victimization among prison inmates with and without a mental disorder. METHODS: The study sampled inmates aged 18 or older in 13 prisons within a single mid-Atlantic state prison system (12 facilities for men and one for women). A total of 7,528 inmates completed the survey instrument, which was administered by audio-computer-assisted technology. Of the 6,964 male respondents, 58.5% were African American, 16.2% were non-Hispanic white, 19.8% were Hispanic, and 5.5% were of another race or ethnicity. Of the 564 female respondents, 48.4% were African American, 30.9% were non-Hispanic white, 14.4% were Hispanic, and 7.3% were of another race or ethnicity. Mental disorder was based on self-reported previous mental health treatment for particular mental disorders. Sexual victimization was measured by using questions adapted from the National Violence Against Women and Men surveys. RESULTS: Approximately one in 12 male inmates with a mental disorder reported at least one incident of sexual victimization by another inmate over a six-month period, compared with one in 33 male inmates without a mental disorder. Among those with a mental disorder, sexual victimization was three times as high among female inmates (23.4%) as among male inmates (8.3%). African-American and Hispanic inmates with a mental disorder, independent of gender, reported higher rates of sexual victimization than their non-Hispanic white counterparts. CONCLUSIONS: Prisons are hazardous places. Steps must be taken to protect inmates from predators inside prison, to screen them for posttraumatic stress disorder, to provide trauma-related treatment, and to keep them safe.

Trends in Mental Health Admissions to Nursing Homes, 1999–2005

The study examined 1999-2005 data on first-time nursing home admissions of individuals with mental illness, dementia, or both to identify trends and characteristics. The Minimum Data Set was used to estimate the number and percentage of persons newly admitted to nursing homes who had mental illness (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or an anxiety disorder), dementia, or both from 1999 to 2005. Data from 2005 were used to compare demographic characteristics and comorbid conditions of the three groups and treatments received. The number of individuals admitted with mental illness increased from 168,721 in 1999 to 187,478 in 2005. The 2005 number is more than 50% higher than the number admitted with dementia only (118,290 in 2005). The increase was driven by growth in admissions of persons with depression--from 128,566 to 154,262 in 2005. Persons admitted with depression had higher rates of comorbid conditions than those admitted with dementia or with neither dementia nor mental illness. They also had high rates of antidepressant treatment and high rates of receipt of training in skills required to return to the community. Current trends show that the proportion of nursing home admissions with mental illness, in particular depression, has overtaken the proportion with dementia. These changes may be related to increased recognition of depression, availability of alternatives to nursing homes for persons with dementia, and increased specialization among nursing homes in the care of postacute, rehabilitation residents. In light of these trends, it is critical to ensure that nursing homes have resources to adequately treat residents with mental illness to facilitate community reintegration.

Perceived Stigma and Mental Health Care Seeking

There is limited empirical evidence on the extent to which perceived public stigma prevents individuals from using mental health services, despite substantial recent policy interest in this issue. This study investigated associations between perceived public stigma and mental health care seeking. This study used cross-sectional survey data from a representative sample of undergraduate and graduate students (N=2,782) at one university. A five-item scale was used to assess perceived public stigma toward mental health service use. Perceived need for help in the past 12 months and current presence of depressive and anxiety disorders were also assessed. Perceived stigma was higher among males, older students, Asian and Pacific Islanders, international students, students with lower socioeconomic status backgrounds, and students with current mental health problems. Perceived stigma was also higher among those without any family members or friends who had used mental health services and among those who believed that therapy or medication is not very helpful. Perceived stigma was negatively associated with the likelihood of perceiving a need for mental health services, but only among younger students. Among those with probable depressive or anxiety disorders, there was no evidence that perceived stigma was associated with service use. These results suggest that, at least in this population, perceived stigma may not be as important a barrier to mental health care as the mental health policy discourse currently assumes.
