Abstract

This study examined the correlation between working memory (WM) and grammaticality judgment ability in L2 learners of Korean and the scoring procedures of WM regarding the learner’s linguistic proficiency. The participants were 69 English & Chinese learners of Korean as a foreign language, who took a working memory test, grammaticality judgment test (GJT) and standard proficiency test. The correlation analyses yielded two main findings. First, the learners who were in the early developmental stage showed the strongest correlation between WM and GJT, while those who were in the middle stage showed no correlation. Second, the scoring procedure with the all-or-nothing unit of scoring showed a substantial correlation with the scores of the grammaticality judgement test regardless of the learner’s developmental stage. We hope that these kinds of empirical studies will result in better understanding of the research methodology of WM and its relationship with other cognitive abilities in the future.
