Abstract

ABSTRACTThis article explores the work of Walerian Borowczyk in the context of the art film—sexploitation binary within European cinema. In order to provide a critical reevaluation of Borowczyk's cinematic discourse on eroticism, the analysis focuses on the representation of female desire and the mapping of female gaze in his film La Bête/The Beast (1975). The impact of the director's unique expertise in visual arts and stop-motion animation is considered when assessing his sustained contemplation of sexuality as a realm of creative expression. The dynamic relationship between the subject and the object with regard to Borowczyk's treatment of the female body is investigated in order to question the label of ‘pornographer’ frequently attached to the director's name.
