Abstract

Abstract In a recent articlel, F. and M. Rinhart have described the discovery of a surviving Wolcott camera, and have discussed the course of Wolcott's co-operation with John Johnson. Johnson was quick to realize that England too would provide an outlet for the use of the new instrument. His father, William S. Johnson, came to England in February 18402 with the design of the camera, probably the draft of the patent that Wolcott was preparing in America, and possibly even with an actual camera. With the idea of making contact with a backer he got in touch with William Carpmael, a patent agent, who introduced him to Richard Beard.
