Bonnen is a professor of agricultural economics at Michigan State University, where he teaches agricultural policy. His research interests include rural development; agricultural policy, including R&D issues; and statistical information system design and policy. He served on the staff of the President's Council of Economic Advisors during 1963–65 and directed the White House Statistical Reorganization Project for the Federal Statistical System in 1978–79.
