Abstract
This article explores the multiplicity of images and concepts connected with the person of Jesus Christ. Whether Jesus is viewed through the lens of freedom and liberative motifs, or is seen in terms of an ancestor, a healer, a shaman, or as a suffering servant, questions around the relevance of this figure to historical and contemporary experience are explored. In addition to traditional Euro-American conceptions of Jesus, this article considers African and Asian understandings of Jesus, the latter including associations and concepts arising from the Hindu tradition in India. The critical sub-text of this essay is the complex relationship between Christ and the cultural context and the expression that attempts to respond to the person who exists at the heart of the Christian faith and theology.
