Abstract

This chapter discusses a new SDR platform called the White RHINO. The White RHINO has been designed to meet the requirements of the 802.22 white space specification but can also be used as a general SDR platform. The SDR was developed at the University Of Cape Town, South Africa and provides powerful functionality in a fully self-contained compact unit that can be produced at a reasonable cost compared to other SDR platforms with similar specifications. This board has a small form factor (\(121 \times 121\) cm), is packed with dual 1 GHz ARM-A9 embedded processors, a fairly large amount of FPGA logic (with 220 DSP slices) and an RF operational bandwidth of 0.3–3 GHz with a maximum instantaneous bandwidth of 28 MHz.
