When Ritual Meets the Feed: TikTok, Mediatization, and the Reconfiguration of Hindu Religious Authority

Purpose: This study analyzes how a Hindu pandita’s transcendent communication (mantra recitation and ritual practice) is mediatized on TikTok by examining content characteristics, engagement dynamics, and audience negotiations between sacred values and platform logic. Methodology: Using a qualitative netnographic approach, the study focuses on the TikTok account @idapandita65. Data were collected through non-participant observation of 86 video posts and 2,144 user comments from January–April 2025, alongside recorded engagement metrics (likes, views, and comments). Findings: Three main findings emerged. First, extended rituals were recontextualized into short-form videos with an average duration of 3.2 minutes, and 67.4% of posts involved self-recording during mantra/ritual performance. Second, engagement increased sharply in April 2025 (20,322 likes; 509,204 views), representing 5,084% and 4,822% increases respectively compared to January, occurring in temporal proximity to the post-Nyepi period (Nyepi: 29 March 2025) and Galungan (23 April 2025), followed shortly by Kuningan (3 May 2025). Third, audience responses were polarized: 45% were appreciative (n=964), 38% were critical—particularly regarding sanctity, concentration, and sesana in self-recorded ritual content (n=814)—and 17% were humorous/ambivalent (n=366). Implications: Theoretically, the findings suggest that TikTok affordances and platform metrics do not merely transmit religion but actively reshape the logic of spiritual authority through algorithmic visibility and public participation. Practically, the study offers guidance for Hindu leaders and institutions to develop digital strategies that protect ritual integrity (e.g., considering delegated recording), and it highlights for platform designers and policymakers the sensitivity of contemplative and sacred ritual content in entertainment-oriented environments. Originality: This study extends mediatization theory to embodied and sonic Hindu ritual practices on short-video platforms, providing empirical evidence on audience polarization and demonstrating how production methods (self-recording vs. third-party recording) shape perceptions of authenticity and religious legitimacy.

From Virality to Engagement: Examining the Transformative Impact of Social Media, Short Video Platforms, and Live Streaming on Information Dissemination and Audience Behavior in the Digital Age

The digital world has changed the way we share and consume information through the adoption of social media, short-form video and live streaming. These tools changed how virality works, how audiences act and how content gets created. This article takes a closer look at the dynamics of virality, and how algorithms and crowdsourcing facilitate quick sharing of information while driving the development of misinformation and echo chambers. Likewise, it explores how users interact with content rather than consume it, and explores engagement metrics, gamification and interactivity. The paper also explores how content is personalized, storyboarded, and made in the creator economy, and how creators must strike a fine line between authenticity and algorithmic needs. In looking at them, this paper gives a general outline of the dramatic changes digital technologies will bring to communication and culture, and what ethical questions they raise. Future research should explore trends such as decentralized platforms and AI in content strategies.

Quality and reliability of osteoarthritis-related health information on short video platforms: a cross-sectional comparative study of TikTok and Bilibili

BackgroundThe proliferation of short video platforms has transformed public health communication, yet the quality of medical information shared on these platforms remains inconsistent. Osteoarthritis (OA), a prevalent and burdensome chronic condition, is frequently featured in online health content. However, the reliability of such information has not been systematically evaluated across major Chinese short video platforms. To assess and compare the quality and reliability of OA-related health information on TikTok and Bilibili, and to examine the influence of uploader type and user engagement metrics on content quality.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, a total of 189 OA-related videos were collected from TikTok (n = 96) and Bilibili (n = 93) using a standardized search strategy. Four validated instruments—the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmarks, modified DISCERN (mDISCERN), Global Quality Score (GQS), and Health on the Net Code (HONcode)—were used for video assessment. Each video was independently rated by two trained reviewers. Differences in quality scores were compared across platforms and uploader types (health professionals vs. non-professionals). Spearman correlation analysis was conducted to explore associations between video quality and engagement metrics (likes, comments, shares, favorites).ResultsTikTok videos exhibited significantly higher median scores on JAMA (2.4 vs. 2.1, P = 0.001), GQS (3.0 vs. 3.0, P = 0.006), and HONcode (11.0 vs. 9.3, P = 0.005) compared to Bilibili. No significant difference was observed for mDISCERN scores. Videos uploaded by healthcare professionals had significantly higher GQS (P = 0.004) and HONcode scores (P = 0.010) than those from non-professionals. User engagement metrics were positively correlated with content quality, particularly on TikTok (e.g., likes vs. JAMA, r = 0.732, P < 0.001).ConclusionsOA-related videos on TikTok demonstrate higher overall quality and reliability compared to Bilibili, especially when created by healthcare professionals. User engagement metrics are positively associated with information quality, underscoring the importance of expert-led digital health communication. These findings highlight the need for platform-level interventions to promote trustworthy content and improve the digital health information ecosystem.

Quality, content structure, and reliability of prostatitis-related information on short-video platforms: a cross-platform analysis of TikTok and Bilibili.

Prostatitis, particularly chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS), remains a common yet challenging condition in urological practice, largely due to its heterogeneous etiology, diagnostic complexity, and high levels of patient anxiety. Increasingly, patients seek information about prostatitis from short-video platforms; however, the quality and clinical relevance of such content remain unclear. A cross-sectional content analysis was conducted to evaluate prostatitis-related videos on TikTok and Bilibili. Video characteristics, engagement metrics, uploader type, and content themes were extracted. Information quality and reliability were assessed using the Global Quality Scale (GQS) and the modified DISCERN (mDISCERN) instrument, while content completeness was evaluated using a six-domain clinical information framework. Comparisons were performed across platforms and uploader categories, and correlations between engagement metrics and quality indicators were analyzed. A total of 223 videos were included. Overall information quality and reliability were moderate. Content distribution was heavily skewed toward treatment-related information, whereas disease awareness, diagnostic principles, and preventive or long-term management content were markedly underrepresented. Videos uploaded by healthcare professionals demonstrated significantly higher quality, reliability, and content completeness than those from non-professional sources. TikTok videos achieved higher overall quality and reliability scores compared with Bilibili. Engagement metrics showed only weak correlations with information quality and reliability indicators. Prostatitis-related information on short-video platforms is characterized by moderate quality and substantial structural imbalance, with an overemphasis on treatment and insufficient coverage of diagnostic reasoning and long-term management. From a urological clinical perspective, incomplete or misleading online information may shape patient expectations and has the potential to complicate clinical communication and shared decision-making, particularly regarding diagnostic evaluation, antibiotic expectations, and long-term management. Greater involvement of urologists in structured digital patient education and the promotion of clinically accurate content are needed to mitigate misinformation and improve patient understanding.

Quality and reliability of Alzheimer's disease videos on Douyin and Bilibili: A cross-sectional content analysis study

BackgroundAlzheimer's disease (AD) poses a significant public health challenge to China's aging population. Patients and their families increasingly turn to short-video platforms such as Douyin and Bilibili for information. However, there is currently a lack of systematic analysis regarding the quality and reliability of advertising content on these platforms, creating a critical gap in understanding this emerging information ecosystem.AimSystematically evaluate the quality and reliability of videos on Douyin and Bilibili, analyzing the relationship between content themes, upload sources, and user engagement metrics.MethodsUsing “Alzheimer's disease” as the keyword, we retrieved the top 100 videos from multiple platforms. Videos were categorized by uploader type and content. Two qualified researchers assessed their reliability and quality using the JAMA, the modified DISCERN instrument (mDISCERN), and Global Quality Score (GQS) scale. Data analysis employed nonparametric statistical methods. Apply relevance and logistic regression analysis to discuss factors that may influence video quality.ResultsThis study analyzed a total of 171 videos. Results indicate that compared to Douyin, videos on the Bilibili platform scored higher across multiple quality evaluation metrics (GQS: 2.0(1.0–2.0) vs 1.0(1.0–2.0); mDISCERN: 2.0(2.0–2.0) vs. 2.0(2.0–2.0); JAMA: 2.0(1.0–2.0) vs. 1.0 (1.0–2.0); p < 0.001). This disparity may be attributed to Bilibili's longer video format, which allows for more in-depth content, and its user base that tends to favor detailed, knowledge-oriented media. Regarding uploader identity, videos posted by professionals (e.g. physicians) demonstrated superior quality compared to nonprofessional sources (e.g. patients). However, patient-uploaded videos exhibited stronger engagement metrics (e.g. likes, comments). Content-wise, videos focusing on disease prevention and treatment consistently achieved the highest overall quality (all comparisons p < 0.05). Correlation analysis indicated that while interaction metrics showed strong internal correlations, they did not significantly correlate with JAMA, mDISCERN, or GQS scores. Ordered logistic regression analysis indicates that uploader identity, content classification, and presentation format are the three key factors influencing video quality.ConclusionThis study reveals a pronounced “quality-dissemination paradox” in AD content across mainstream short-video platforms: While scientifically rigorous content published by medical professionals receives high quality ratings, it significantly underperforms in user engagement metrics compared to nonprofessional content centered on patient narratives and lived experiences. This highlights a severe disconnect between scientific rigor and public participation within algorithmic dissemination ecosystems. To address this, platforms should optimize algorithms to enhance the visibility of authoritative content, encourage collaboration between professional and nonprofessional creators to boost content appeal, and strengthen health media literacy education for the public—particularly older adults—to improve their ability to discern information.

Quality, Reliability, and Dissemination of Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy Information on Short-Video Platforms in China: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a high-risk liver disorder complicating pregnancy. Short-video platforms are a major health information source, yet the quality of ICP-related content is unknown. This study aimed to explore the quality, reliability, and dissemination of ICP-related information online. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on December 11, 2025. The top 100 videos for the Chinese ICP term from Kwai, Red Notes, and TikTok were screened. Video basic characteristics and engagement metrics were extracted. Quality was assessed using the Global Quality Scale (GQS), a modified Decision-making Information Support Criteria for Evaluating the Reliability of Non-randomised Studies (mDISCERN), Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Benchmark criteria, and a Content Completeness Score (CCS). Non-parametric data were summarized using medians and interquartile ranges (IQRs). Group comparisons were conducted with the Kruskal-Wallis test, and correlations were assessed via Spearman's correlation analysis. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05, with analyses performed using IBM SPSS 30.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY) and a few online platforms. Results A total of 174 videos were included for systematic analyses. Video quality was moderate (GQS median 3.00) and varied across three platforms. Content completeness was suboptimal (CCS median 5.00). Videos from healthcare professionals scored higher. User engagement metrics (likes, comments) were significantly higher on TikTok (ByteDance Ltd., Beijing, China) but showed negligible or weak correlations with quality scores across all platforms. Conclusion The quality of ICP information on short-video platforms is inconsistent and often incomplete, despite high social engagement. Professional sources are more reliable, but significant informational gaps persist. This highlights a public health need for improved platform governance, professional content creation, and enhanced digital health literacy for pregnant women.

Short-form video sharing platforms as a source of information for children's growing pains: A cross-sectional content analysis study.

To evaluate the quality, reliability, and educational value of short-form videos pertaining to children's growing pains on popular social media platforms (TikTok, Rednote, Bilibili, and YouTube). A cross-sectional analysis of 200 short-form videos (50 per platform) was conducted using standardized search terms. Video quality was assessed using four validated instruments: modified DISCERN (mDISCERN), the Global Quality Scale (GQS), the Video Information and Quality Index (VIQI), and the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT). Metadata and user engagement metrics were collected, and statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, group comparisons, and correlation analyses. TikTok demonstrated superior performance compared to other platforms in reliability (mDISCERN: 3.00 (3.00, 4.00); GQS: 4.00 (3.00, 4.00); median (IQR); p < 0.001), educational value (PEMAT-Understandability: 80.00 (66.70, 92.22); PEMAT-Actionability: 80.00 (60.00, 80.00); median (IQR); p < 0.001), and content comprehensiveness (VIQI-Total score: 14.00 (12.25, 15.00); median (IQR); p < 0.001). Videos created by healthcare professionals showed significantly higher quality scores and more comprehensive clinical content coverage. User engagement metrics such as likes, comments, video duration, and followers showed positive correlations with several video quality scores (r: 0.12-0.56, p < 0.05). However, engagement alone should not be considered a definitive indicator of quality. In conclusion, while short-form videos represent a valuable educational resource for parents, their quality varies significantly across platforms and creators. Content from healthcare professionals, particularly on TikTok, was found to be more reliable and robust. This underscores the critical role of platform algorithms in quality curation. Future initiatives should therefore encourage professional creator participation and optimize recommendation systems to prioritize informational accuracy.

Quality of rib fracture-related video information on TikTok and Bilibili: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundRib fracture is one of the most common thoracic injuries and is associated with impaired respiratory function, severe pain, and adverse clinical outcomes. With the increasing demand for accessible health information, short-video platforms such as TikTok and Bilibili have emerged as major channels for public medical knowledge dissemination. However, due to the lack of standardized content regulation, the quality, accuracy, and reliability of health-related videos remain highly variable. In this context, a systematic evaluation of such content is needed. Therefore, this study aims to comprehensively assess the quality, reliability, and dissemination characteristics of rib fracture-related videos on TikTok and Bilibili, and to further examine the impact of uploader background on content quality.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted on 136 videos (TikTok=85; Bilibili=51). Video characteristics, uploader information, and engagement metrics were systematically collected. Content quality and reliability were evaluated using four validated instruments: the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool for Audiovisual Materials (PEMAT-A/V), Video Information and Quality Index (VIQI), Global Quality Score (GQS), and modified DISCERN (mDISCERN). Non-parametric statistical tests were applied for group comparisons, and Spearman correlation analysis was used to explore associations between video quality and engagement indicators.ResultsTikTok videos were significantly shorter and demonstrated higher engagement metrics compared with Bilibili videos (all P<0.001). In contrast, Bilibili videos showed superior educational quality. The GQS score was significantly higher on Bilibili (3 vs. 2, P=0.019), while PEMAT-A/V and VIQI scores were also higher, although without statistical significance. Videos uploaded by medical professionals or institutional accounts achieved significantly higher scores across all quality assessment tools (P<0.01). Correlation analysis indicated that video quality was weakly to moderately negatively associated with engagement metrics, particularly comment counts (e.g., TikTok mDISCERN: r=−0.270, P<0.05).ConclusionsThe overall quality and reliability of rib fracture–related short videos on TikTok and Bilibili remain suboptimal. While Bilibili provides relatively higher-quality and more educational content, TikTok demonstrates stronger dissemination capacity. Uploader background plays a critical role in determining content quality. Enhancing professional participation and establishing standardized content review and certification mechanisms are essential to improve the accuracy, reliability, and public health value of medical information on short-video platforms.

Quality, reliability, and content completeness of Chinese-language short videos on impacted wisdom teeth on TikTok and Bilibili: a cross-sectional study.

Short-video platforms have become major channels for disseminating public health information. This study evaluated the quality, reliability, and content completeness of videos on impacted wisdom teeth on TikTok and Bilibili. It examined whether platform type, uploader category, and user engagement metrics were associated with these outcomes. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on November 20, 2025. The top 150 videos from each platform were retrieved using the standard Chinese clinical term for impacted wisdom teeth. After screening, 199 videos were included. Quality and reliability were assessed using the Global Quality Score (GQS), modified DISCERN (mDISCERN), and Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark criteria. Content completeness was assessed using an 8-item clinical checklist. Uploaders were categorized as specialized healthcare professionals (SHCPs), non-specialized healthcare professionals (NSHCPs), and individual users (IUs). Non-parametric tests and Spearman's correlation analysis were used. Overall video quality and reliability were moderate, with median GQS, mDISCERN, and JAMA scores of 3.00. An "indication-heavy, contraindication-light" pattern was observed: indications (76.38%) and definitions (68.34%) were frequently covered, whereas contraindications (5.53%) were rarely addressed. Videos uploaded by SHCPs had significantly higher quality and reliability scores than those uploaded by IUs (all P < 0.001). Engagement metrics, including likes and shares, were not positively correlated with the established quality measures. Short videos on impacted wisdom teeth on Chinese short-video platforms were of moderate quality and provided limited coverage of contraindications and other risk-related information. Videos uploaded by specialized healthcare professionals tended to provide more reliable and complete information than those from non-professional sources. In contrast, user engagement metrics were not reliable indicators of informational quality. These findings may inform efforts to strengthen evidence-based dental communication on short-video platforms.

The quality and reliability of herpes zoster information on TikTok and Bilibili: A cross-sectional study

ObjectiveHerpes zoster (HZ) is a common viral skin disease. As short video platforms have become an important source of health information, evaluating the quality of HZ-related content is increasingly important.MethodsThis cross-sectional study analyzed 186 HZ-related videos collected from the Chinese short video platforms TikTok (n = 96) and Bilibili (n = 90) from 12 to 16 July 2025. Video characteristics (duration, likes, shares, comments, and collections), content domains (etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis), and uploader identity were recorded. Quality was evaluated using the Global Quality Score (GQS) and modified DISCERN (mDISCERN).ResultsTikTok videos had shorter durations (47.5 vs.196.0 seconds) but significantly higher engagement metrics, including likes (481.5 vs. 29.5), comments (20.5 vs. 3.5), and shares (152.5 vs. 19.0). Most videos were uploaded by pain medicine specialists (31.72%), followed by traditional Chinese medicine physicians (27.96%) and dermatologists (19.35%). Treatment was the most frequently addressed topic (67.74%), whereas prognosis was least discussed (18.28%). The median GQS was 2.00 (interquartile range (IQR): 1.00–3.00) and the mDISCERN score was 3.00 (IQR 1.00–3.00). Dermatologists achieved higher GQS and mDISCERN scores than patients and traditional Chinese medicine physicians (p < 0.05). No significant correlations were observed between engagement metrics and GQS scores (p > 0.05).ConclusionsHZ-related videos on short video platforms are of moderate quality and skewed toward treatment. Dermatologists involvement and better content regulation are needed. More emphasis should be placed on prognosis education to enhance public understanding.

The quality and reliability of short videos about Sjögren syndrome on TikTok and Bilibili: A cross-sectional study.

Short video platforms have become significant sources of health information, yet evidence on the quality and reliability of Sjögren syndrome (SS)-related short videos is limited, particularly with respect to comparative assessments across different platforms. This study aimed to evaluate the quality and reliability of short videos of SS on TikTok and Bilibili. A cross-sectional study was conducted in China by searching predefined SS-related keywords on TikTok and Bilibili. Searches were performed up to October 7, 2025, and the top 120 videos from each platform were included (n = 240). Video characteristics, content categories, and uploader types were extracted. Information quality and reliability were assessed using the Global Quality Scale (GQS; higher scores indicate better overall educational quality) and modified DISCERN (mDISCERN; higher scores indicate greater reliability and better-quality health information). Chi-square tests were used to assess differences in platform distributions, while the Mann-Whitney U test compared engagement data and quality scores between TikTok and Bilibili. Spearman rank correlation (ρ) was used to assess associations between engagement metrics and quality scores. Of the 220 videos analyzed (TikTok: 108; Bilibili: 112), content predominantly covered symptoms (176, 80.0%), diagnosis (118, 53.6%), and treatment (78, 35.4%), whereas epidemiology (32, 14.5%), etiology (54, 24.5%), and prevention (41, 18.6%) were less frequent. Among uploaders, specialists contributed the largest share of videos (n = 147), whereas nonspecialists and individual users accounted for fewer videos (n = 43 and n = 30, respectively). The overall median GQS and mDISCERN scores were both 2.00 (interquartile range: 2.00-3.00), indicating suboptimal quality. Videos uploaded by specialists exhibited significantly higher GQS and mDISCERN scores than those uploaded by nonspecialists or individual users (P < .0001). Engagement metrics were weakly correlated with quality scores. SS-related short videos on TikTok and Bilibili in China showed suboptimal information quality and reliability and uneven topic coverage, with epidemiology, etiology, and prevention being underrepresented. Videos uploaded by specialists were associated with higher GQS and mDISCERN scores. These findings highlight the need for better regulation and monitoring of health content on short video platforms.

Short videos platforms as sources of health information about cervical cancer screening: A content and quality analysis

BackgroundCervical cancer is a significant global health concern with over 662,000 new cases and approximately 349,000 deaths in 2022. Despite the clear benefits of screening, a portion of the population remains unaware of its importance. In China, short video platforms such as Kuaishou, Bilibili, and TikTok host numerous related videos, but the quality varies significantly.MethodUsing the keyword “cervical cancer screening,” the top 100 videos on each platform were searched (totaling 300), with 259 meeting the criteria. A comparative analysis was conducted on video duration, engagement metrics (likes, favorites, comments, shares), follower count, uploader identity, and video type. The Global Quality Score (GQS) and modified DISCERN tool were used for evaluation.ResultsThe study included 82 Kuaishou videos, 93 Bilibili videos, and 84 TikTok videos. Bilibili had the longest median video duration (109 s), while Kuaishou had the shortest (54.5 s). Kuaishou outperformed TikTok and Bilibili in engagement metrics. TikTok had a higher proportion of videos on the importance, process, considerations, and timing of screening. Professional uploaders (obstetricians and gynecologists whose expertise directly pertains to cervical cancer screening) were most prevalent on TikTok (74%). TikTok videos had the highest quality scores in GQS and mDISCERN, followed by Bilibili and Kuaishou. Significant differences in mDISCERN scores were found among the platforms (all pairwise comparisons p < .001). Spearman rank correlation analysis showed that higher-quality videos (measured by GQS and mDISCERN) were more likely to achieve higher audience engagement. Still, video duration did not affect quality or engagement.ConclusionSocial media platforms provide accessible health information, but the quality and reliability of cervical cancer screening videos vary significantly. Professionally uploaded videos generally have higher engagement and information reliability. Content creators should prioritize high-quality, accurate videos, and platforms should enhance content quality control to prevent misinformation dissemination.

This study explores the effects of content recommendation algorithms on user viewing behavior on short video platforms, with a particular focus on TikTok and similar platforms. By analyzing large data sets and using a variety of statistical methods, by investigate how different recommendation algorithms affect users' viewing time, interaction patterns, and platform engagement. Research shows that personalized recommendation algorithms significantly affect user behavior, and hybrid recommendation systems show better performance than traditional content-based and collaborative filtering methods. The findings show that entertainment content generally generates higher engagement metrics than educational content and that different content types elicit different user responses. In addition, this paper proposes a new multimodal hybrid recommendation algorithm (MMHRA) that integrates content-based recommendation, collaborative filtering, and multimodal learning techniques. Experimental results show that MMHRA has higher accuracy (92%), recall rate (90%), and F1 value (91%) than traditional recommendation algorithms. This study helps people to understand the role of recommendation algorithms in short video platforms and improve the user experience and content delivery of short video media platforms.

#Herbalism on TikTok: An Analysis of Engagement Metrics, Content Themes, and Influencer Credibility in Digital Health Communication.

Digital media has transformed health communication, with TikTok emerging as a key platform for disseminating herbalism-related content. Reliance on such content, particularly among young adults, necessitates a critical examination of the presentation and engagement of such information online. This study investigates the representation of herbal wellness on TikTok, examining the relationship between content typologies, influencer credibility, user engagement metrics, and their implications for public health communication. A cross-sectional, descriptive analysis was conducted using the first 120 videos under the #herbalism hashtag, captured on January 30, 2025. Two independent reviewers employed a coding scheme adapted from established methodologies to classify content into themes (e.g., personal experiences, spiritual health, and educational). Statistical analyses, including Mann-Whitney U tests and Spearman's correlation, were performed to evaluate differences and associations in engagement metrics. The study was performed on TikTok, a social media platform characterized by short-form videos and use among young adults. 120 videos were analyzed. Although detailed demographic data of viewers was unavailable, the content primarily targeted a young adult audience. This observational study involved no direct intervention; instead, it systematically categorized and analyzed naturally occurring digital content. Engagement was quantified using metrics such as likes, comments, views, saves, and shares. These were correlated with specific content themes and influencer attributes. Videos referencing spiritual health exhibited higher engagement across multiple metrics, while those featuring personal experiences witnessed lower user interaction. The correlation analyses corroborated these trends, highlighting the influential role of thematic content in shaping audience responses. Findings underscore the dominance of influencer-driven, spiritually resonant herbalism content on TikTok, and raise concerns about frequent uncredentialed expert input. Quality and Reliability of Upper Eyelid Ptosis-Related Short Videos on Bilibili and TikTok: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Upper eyelid ptosis is a commonly encountered ophthalmological disease that reduces both visual performance and quality of life. Short-video platforms have become popular sources for health information. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability, accuracy, and content features of short-form videos addressing upper eyelid ptosis available on social media platforms TikTok and Bilibili. We searched "upper eyelid ptosis" and collected the top 150 videos from each platform using default rankings. Assessment utilized mDISCERN, Global Quality Score (GQS), and Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark for video quality evaluation. We assembled and examined basic video properties, content scope, and user engagement metrics. Platform and uploader category comparisons addressed general characteristics and video quality parameters. Analysis included 214 videos. Median video length was 63.50 seconds (IQR: 43.75-104.75). Most videos covered etiology (74.8%), clinical manifestations (84.6%), diagnosis (79.4%), and treatment (81.8%). However, epidemiology, prevention, and prognosis were rarely discussed. Video quality proved inadequate: median GQS reached 3.00 (IQR: 2.00-3.00), mDISCERN scored 2.00 (IQR: 1.00-4.00), and JAMA achieved 2.00 (IQR: 2.00-3.00). Content from professional healthcare providers attained superior quality (median GQS and mDISCERN = 3.00, P < 0.001 ), whereas individual users generated the highest engagement levels. User interaction metrics showed no significant association with video quality scores. Overall quality of ptosis-related short videos on TikTok and Bilibili remained inadequate, displaying systematic deficiencies in content organization. Professional healthcare provider videos showed enhanced quality but reduced engagement rates. Our findings also emphasize the need to encourage healthcare professionals to become more involved in health-related social media dissemination to enhance the effectiveness of reliable medical content sharing on short-video platforms.

Evaluating the content quality and trustworthiness of snakebite envenomation videos on social media platforms: insights from TikTok and Bilibili.

Snakebite envenomation is a severe medical emergency and major global health threat. As short-video platforms increasingly shape public access to health information, accurate and reliable digital education is essential for snakebite prevention and first-aid decision-making. Although the quality of medical videos on short-video platforms has been examined for several diseases, little is known about the quality, reliability, and content characteristics of snakebite envenomation-related videos on major Chinese platforms. This study aimed to systematically assess the quality, reliability, and content characteristics of snakebite envenomation-related videos on TikTok (Douyin) and Bilibili, and to explore strategies for improving the quality of online health information. On February 17, 2026, we searched TikTok (Douyin) and Bilibili using the keywords "snakebite envenomation" and "snake envenoming". After videos with content irrelevant to the study keywords, commercial advertisements, duplicate videos, and videos uploaded within the preceding week were excluded according to predefined criteria, 220 eligible videos were included in the final analysis. For each video, we extracted duration, audience engagement metrics, uploader type, and other basic characteristics. Video quality was independently evaluated in a double-blind manner using the Global Quality Score (GQS), modified DISCERN (mDISCERN), and Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmarks. Group differences were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests, and correlations among variables were assessed using Spearman's rank correlation. Of the 300 initially screened videos, 220 were included in the final analysis, comprising 114(51.82%) videos from TikTok (Douyin) and 106(48.18%) from Bilibili. Most videos were presented in Mandarin Chinese. Etiology, clinical manifestations, treatment, and diagnosis were frequently covered, whereas epidemiology and prevention were less commonly addressed. Bilibili videos were significantly longer than TikTok (Douyin) videos 311.00 (150.75, 514.25) vs 101.00 (58.50, 171.00) seconds (P < 0.001), whereas TikTok (Douyin) videos had significantly more shares 59.00 (10.25, 717.75) vs 34.00 (3.00, 282.25) (P = 0.049). The overall median GQS, mDISCERN, and JAMA scores were 3.00 (3.00, 4.00), 3.00 (3.00, 3.00), and 1.00 (1.00, 2.00), respectively. No significant platform-based differences were observed in GQS or mDISCERN scores, but JAMA scores differed significantly between platforms (P = 0.020). Videos uploaded by healthcare professionals and nonprofit organizations had significantly higher GQS scores than those uploaded by individual users 4.00 (4.00, 5.00) and 4.00 (3.00, 4.00) vs 3.00 (2.00, 3.00), respectively; (P < 0.001), as well as higher JAMA scores both 2.00 (2.00, 2.00) vs 1.00 (1.00, 1.00) (P < 0.001). Engagement metrics were strongly interrelated (all P < 0.001), but showed limited associations with quality scores. GQS and JAMA correlated only with shares (P = 0.015 and P = 0.045, respectively), whereas mDISCERN was positively correlated with likes, collections, comments, and shares (P = 0.042, P = 0.025, P = 0.011, and P = 0.004, respectively). Snakebite envenomation-related videos on TikTok (Douyin) and Bilibili provided moderately useful health information, but showed important limitations in preventive content coverage and information transparency. Videos uploaded by healthcare professionals and nonprofit organizations were generally of higher quality and transparency than those uploaded by individual users, while audience engagement was not consistently aligned with content quality. These findings highlight the need for greater professional involvement, clearer source disclosure, and more standardized prevention- and first-aid-oriented content to improve the reliability and public health value of snakebite-related information on short-video platforms.
