The article aims to analyze how the large-scale buildings designed to host entertainment activities during the 1960s and 1970s in socialist Romania transitioned from iconic experimental architecture to an obsolete problematic heritage. During those years, leisure activities became part of the propaganda while state-funded infrastructure was built around them. Organized leisure time is directed towards shaping the ‘new man’. The paper focuses on two different architectural programs that fit into the leisure section: restaurants and commercial centers within holiday resorts and multi-purpose sports halls in cities. The objects in question are defined by different types of post-war modern architecture, varying from mid-century modern up to brutalism. During the socialist period, both case studies were directly managed by the state, from financial aspects to functional ones. After the fall of the communist regime, their status changed, and they endured the transition from a closed socialist economy to a capitalist one. While the sports halls remained under public administration, the restaurants and commercial centers in the holiday resorts were privatized. Alongside a series of unfortunate events that occurred during the 1990s, the general public developed a negative perception of this kind of architecture due to its connection with the former regime. While both case studies are relevant to the entertainment of the general public before 1989, after the fall of the socialist regime, there is a difference in their management and subsequent use, resulting in their presentation in parallel in this paper. The research is centered on how the changes after 1989 led to the fragile state of this heritage today and aims to propose contemporary approaches to properly address them. The buildings suffered both reversible and irreversible transformations, lack funding, and are improperly exploited. Since the late modern socialist heritage is often disregarded in Romania, this paper aims to establish possible guidelines for preserving and adapting these buildings for the present and the future.

Object of the analysis. The influence of employees’ burnout on organized leisure time. Investigation problem. Previous studies have shown that burnout is a factor that affects civil servants. As the employees’ well-being can influence the organization’s activities, the impact of the burnout on employees is a topical issue and is increasingly being analysed among scientists, but the effect of the burnout in organizing leisure activities is not widely researched, therefore the problem of this work is relevant and explorable. The impact of the burnout on leisure time employment could be more effective in organizing activities. Research methods – scientific literature data analysis, statistical analysis of data, structured interview. Aim of the analysis: to evaluate the impact of the burnout of employees on organized leisure time. Goals of the analysis. 1. Based on the analysis of scientific literature, to reveal theoretical concepts of leisure-time organization and leisure services. 2. To introduce the burnout contact with leisure time organization. 3. To analyse the impact of staff burnout ton organized leisure time. The results of the research revealed that the determination of the manifestation of burnout is important, the status of the leisure organizer and the quality of the organized activity depend on it. Therefore, the burnout manifestations that have been observed in a timely manner must be stopped so that the leisure time is organized properly. It has been found that the causes of the burnout are related to the leisure organizer and leisure activities. It is important for leisure organizers to pay attention to the success of the organized activities. Many respondents identified burnout factors that prove burnout. Outcomes and conclusions. This confirms that the burnout negatively affects the quality of the leisure time. In order to improve leisure activities, it is suggested to take into account the recommendations: 1. To identify the illness and its manifestations, to identify the causes of the manifestation, to try to overcome them with their own help or with the help of specialists. 2. To create conditions for training and counselling for psychologists that would promote the resolution of stress situations, conflict management, overcoming stress and ensuring good working relationships in a leisure setting. 3. Organize seminars for leisure organizers in which there would be a possibility to improve. 4. Encourage leisure organizers to engage in activities that meet their personal needs and interests.

This article considers the main leisure activities of Magnitogorsk residents in the early 1950s based on their personal memories, local materials of the clerical sources, and periodicals. The analysis shows how the residents spent their free time and what emotions they had. On the one hand, the leisure options of that time (for example, going to cinemas, theaters, parks, circuses, libraries, concerts, sports sections, hobby clubs, public lectures, public readings of books, educational meetings arranged by the party, as well as organizing holidays and public events, amateur art shows, mass leisure out of town, resort holidays, etc.) were largely defined by the political regime and ideology. On the other hand, the urban community either tacitly rejected or changed those activities that turned out to be unpopular or boring. At the same time, one of the main trends supported by the Magnitogorsk residents was collectivism and publicity while engaging in a leisure activity. The latter two formed an integral part of the Soviet consciousness. Particular attention is paid to the problems faced by the city in the organization of leisure and recreational activities: the construction of cultural and entertainment venues failed to keep up with the growth of the city population; some residents were not properly educated about the value and importance of certain leisure types. The workers were tired because of their hard working shifts at the metallurgical plant and everyday life, thus many of them showed no interest in outdoor activities. It is concluded that the organization of leisure time in Magnitogorsk, which was a role model for the entire Soviet society, was essential in upholding the morale of its residents.

  • Daria Jašarević + 4 more

Leisure time in contemporary society is increasingly becoming a crucial factor in shaping the personalities of children and youth. Alongside family, schools play a central role in organizing and shaping students' leisure time. The aim of this paper is to examine the role of schools in the pedagogical structuring of students’ leisure time and to explore differences in the perception of leisure time between students in urban and rural schools. The research was conducted on a sample of 140 seventh-grade students from elementary schools in the Tuzla Canton. The study analyzed students' ways of spending leisure time, the involvement and support of schools in organizing leisure time, and the perception of societal support for students' leisure activities. The results of the research indicate that students most frequently spend their leisure time in activities without significant pedagogical influence. Most students occasionally participate in school clubs, with significant differences observed between urban and rural schools in the type and number of activities available. Teachers and parents are the primary sources of support in organizing leisure time, while the broader community offers limited support. The findings suggest that schools play an important role in the organization of leisure time but that there are significant disparities in the activities available to students in different environments. Although activities such as sports and cultural clubs remain popular, students are increasingly gravitating towarddigital content, which may reduce the pedagogical value of leisure time. Schools should continue to develop and adapt leisure activities to meet students’ needs, with greater involvement from the broader community and support in fostering healthy and constructive patterns of leisure time usage. Keywords:school, children, education, leisure time.

  • Atefeh Zare Sani + 1 more

This study aims to explore how public amenities, such as school location, commercial centers, health centers, highways, and distance to the central business district (CBD) shape the development of a metropolitan area. To do so, a case study based on the Québec Metropolitan Region (QMR-Canada) is proposed. Using Landsat satellite images from 1986 to 2022, the research employs a Random Forest Classification algorithm, leveraging features like the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Modified Built-up Index (MBI) to map and quantify changes in built-up areas over time. The originality of this study lies in its use of a panel logistic model to systematically assess the influence of these factors on urban growth. Results show that urban development tends to decrease with distance from CBDs, though significant urban sprawl was observed between 1996 and 2002. The model highlights key periods—1996, 2002, and 2007—as pivotal in shaping development. Statistically significant effects were found for proximity to CBDs, main roads, and education centers, while commercial and health centers had no notable impact.

  • Nur Fadilah Darmansah + 3 more

Horse stall design plays a vital role for every horse owner and equine center. In early planning stage, it is crucial to decide the factors that may affect the design of the horse stall as poor construction stall which reduces horse performance. Hence, it raises number of injury cases and lower the horses confident. The objective this study is to investigate the current design component of commercial equine center. The chosen five (5) commercial equine centers are well-known equine center with criteria including active operating livery services and frequent conducting equestrian competition. Data collection using the checklist in observation to six (6) main component which are dimension, door, ventilation and lighting, partition, interior (watering and feeding) flooring, and drainage. The results of study shown that the stall dimension typically used in commercial equine centers is 12 x 12 ft in stall size, 7 ft in wall height, and 15 ft in ceiling height. Galvanized iron material for door, approximately 5 ft and 6 ft door width, 4 ft door height, placing the door on the left of the horse stall with door hinges and bolt were used. The air circulation fan and natural ventilation as well as electric light fixtures and natural lighting from outside. Combination of brick or concrete with metal for partition material for stall at height of 7ft or 8 ft. Heavy-duty yellow plastic for water and feed were used and placed front side of stall. The flooring are used concrete with cement along with rubber matt for absorption. Overall, the current stall design trends for equine housing in commercial centers in Peninsular Malaysia prioritize enhancing the well-being and performance of horses. The key characteristics of these trends involve roomy and well-ventilated stalls, high-quality construction materials, and features that enhance natural light and airflow. Moreover, there is an increasing focus on ergonomic design features intended to improve horse comfort and minimize the likelihood of damage. These patterns highlight the changing comprehension and emphasis on equine welfare among facility managers and owners in Malaysia’s equine industry.

Recently, urban commercial centers’ layout attracts great attention in research fields of urban planning and economics. This paper proposes an approach, which can identify the boundary of urban commercial centers and classify these centers into a hierarchical classes by using open data source POIs. Two non-parametric algorithm: modified ASCDT and the k-means clustering algorithm are used to measure the agglomeration effect of commercial industries, detect industry centers and commercial centers, and classify industry centers and commercial centers. As a case study, this approach is applied to Harbin, China and find out 374 commercial centers in four levels. To some extent, this result reflects the reality of commercial centers distribution of Harbin. This result provide the information support of layout planning and location decision-making for planners and investors. The non-parametric adaptive clustering algorithm and accessible POIs data are used to make the approach applying to extensive region and more cities.

  • Maria Hurnik + 3 more

Air conditioning systems in buildings consume a significant part of the world’s energy, and yet there are cases wherein users are not satisfied with the quality of the thermal environment. Examples of such special cases are sports halls, which require different thermal conditions within a single zone. Thermal diagnostics for buildings can be used to diagnose problems. The aim of the paper was to analyse the effectiveness of the ventilation and cooling systems of a sports hall with a cubature of 16,300 m3 and to check the possibility of managing the hall’s cooling demands via the existing air conditioning system. Diagnostic measurements were performed, including in situ measurements of ventilation air flows from the diffusers and their temperatures, visualization of the supply air flows, and monthly registration of the indoor temperature in the hall at different set temperatures of the supply and exhaust air. Additionally, a numerical analysis, using EnergyPlus simulations, of cooling demand was performed with regard to the varying uses of the hall. The analysis based on measurement and simulation showed that it is not possible to remove heat gains from the hall with the current available ventilation air flow.

Rural tourism as risk factor for the transmission of schistosomiasis in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
  • Aug 1, 2004
  • Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz
  • Martin J Enk + 3 more

Recently, the booming rural tourism in endemic areas of the state of Minas Gerais was identified as a contributing factor in the dissemination of the infection with Schistosoma mansoni. This article presents data from six holiday resorts in a rural district approximately 100 km distant from Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil, where a possibly new and until now unperceived way of transmission was observed. The infection takes place in swimming pools and little ponds, which are offered to tourists and the local population for fishing and leisure activities. The health authorities of the district reported cases of schistosomiasis among the local population after visiting these sites. As individuals of the non-immune middle class parts of the society of big urban centers also frequent these resorts, infection of these persons cannot be excluded. A malacological survey revealed the presence of molluscs of the species Biomphalaria glabrata and Biomphalaria straminea at the resorts. The snails (B. glabrata) of one resort tested positive for S. mansoni. In order to resolve this complex problem a multidisciplinary approach including health education, sanitation measures, assistance to the local health services, and evolvement of the local political authorities, the local community, the tourism association, and the owners of the leisure resorts is necessary. This evidence emphasizes the urgent need for a participative strategic plan to develop the local tourism in an organized and well-administered way. Only so this important source of income for the region can be ensured on the long term without disseminating the disease and putting the health of the visitors at risk.

Fiction and Imagination: How They Affect Public Administration
  • Nov 1, 1995
  • Public Administration Review
  • Howard E Mccurdy

For more than 50 years, scholars and practitioners have examined the role that fiction plays in public administration. For the most part, attention has centered on the degree to which practitioners can learn something about administration by exposing themselves to works of fiction (Egger, 1944, 1959; Waldo, 1968; Kroll, 1965, 1981). Fiction has been used as a teaching device, like the case study, to illustrate principles and expand experience (Holzer, Morris, and Ludwin, 1979; Argyle and Bright, 1992; Hunker, 1992; Marini, 1992a, 1992b). In this article, I suggest that fiction plays an additional role in public administration. I argue that fiction (and other works of imagination) affect what public managers do and how they do it. Fiction appears to shape the policies that public servants carry out and the way in which they conduct their duties. It probably influences the choice of administrative methods. It does this by entering the public consciousness or popular culture and becoming part of the cognitive base for making decisions about public policy and administration. This expanded view of fiction complements broader efforts currently underway to examine ways in which managers imagine the world around them (Morgan, 1986; Kass and Catron, 1990; Hummel, 1991; Kramer, 1992). It is also part of the effort to understand the relationship between humanistic arts and public administration. The latter is being advanced by a new Section on Humanistic, Artistic, and Reflective Expression in the American Society for Public Administration; by the section's new journal Public Voices, and by a new book on the role of the arts by Charles Goodsell and Nancy Murray (1995). Conventionally, fiction is a term that encompasses works of art portraying imaginary events and persons, as in novels, cinema, television drama, and the theater. I have broadened the subject matter to include additional works that seek to portray events or places in imaginative ways, especially those in the future. Television docu-dramas, various types of paintings, theme parks, and popular science thus join fiction in a broader class of media that affect administration through imagination. In this article, I present three cases that illustrate the influence of fiction and imagination upon public administration. The debate over the best way to treat the mentally ill shows how fiction can influence the outcome of policy debates, especially those for which empirical evidence remains inconclusive. The creation of the U.S. space program shows why other works of imagination must be included along with the study of fiction. The case of the National Performance Review illustrates the way in which fiction affects the course of administrative reform. These cases are followed by some suggestions on the ways in which the study of fiction and imagination might improve the understanding of public administration. Fiction and Mental Institutions Fiction can influence the choice of public policies and the methods for carrying them out, especially in areas where experts cannot agree. This phenomenon is well illustrated by the history of the deinstitutionalization movement. During the 1960s, a great debate took place in the United States on the best way to organize public facilities for the mentally ill. It culminated in the effort to replace large state institutions with community-based mental health centers. The debate began within fairly narrow policy circles, among specialists who treated the mentally ill. The issues they raised could not be settled conclusively through scientific investigation, as is often the case with public policy. Works of fiction slipped into this intellectual vacuum, creating vivid images that lent support to the advocates of deinstitutionalization. Sociologists and psychologists had begun the debate before the 1960s, with a small group of reformers suggesting that government incarceration of the mentally ill served to remove the powerless and odd from society. …

Bioinspired shape shifting of liquid-infused ribbed sheets
  • Dec 29, 2022
  • Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America
  • Jean Cappello + 3 more

The recent emergence of stimuli-responsive, shape-shifting materials offers promising applications in fields as different as soft robotics, aeronautics, or biomedical engineering. Targeted shapes or movements are achieved from the advantageous coupling between some stimulus and various materials such as liquid crystalline elastomers, magnetically responsive soft materials, swelling hydrogels, etc. However, despite the large variety of strategies, they are strongly material dependent and do not offer the possibility to choose between reversible and irreversible transformations. Here, we introduce a strategy applicable to a wide range of materials yielding systematically reversible or irreversible shape transformations of soft ribbed sheets with precise control over the local curvature. Our approach-inspired by the spore-releasing mechanism of the fern sporangium-relies on the capillary deformation of an architected elastic sheet impregnated by an evaporating liquid. We develop an analytical model combining sheet geometry, material stiffness, and capillary forces to rationalize the onset of such deformations and develop a geometric procedure to inverse program target shapes requiring fine control over the curvature gradient. We finally demonstrate the potential irreversibility of the transformation by UV-curing a photosensitive evaporating solution and show that the obtained shells exhibit enhanced mechanical stiffness.
