Abstract

Much effort has been made in the past to improve the efficiency of anther culture in wheat, and to apply the technique in breeding practice (Hu 1986; Henry and de Buyser 1986; Hu and Huang 1987). To date, anther culture has been the most efficient means of production of haploid and homozygous diploid in wheat, and, potentially, productivity of wheat anther culture can be manyfold higher than has been achieved so far. This chapter reviews some recent progress made in improving the efficiency of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) anther culture, particularly by manipulating temperatures for pretreatment and anther culture, and speculates on modes of action of temperature treatment in wheat anther culture. Possible approaches to further optimize procedures of wheat anther culture and to better understand pollen development in vitro are discussed.
