Abstract

A survey of almost 1500 bus passengers in Milton Keynes and Northampton was carried out by the MVA Consultancy in 1993 on behalf of a consortium of local authorities. Those passengers requiring travel information typically were: people making a journey for the first time (74%); people making an infrequent journey (34%); holiday travellers; and those undertaking long journeys (over one hour travelling time). Passengers were asked in the survey to rank in order of preference, how timetable information should be presented, and the preferred order was: (1) printed timetable leaflet; (2) display board; (3) enquiry service at bus station; (4) telephone enquiry; (5) video monitor; and (6) enquiry terminal. Ways of encouraging the use of electronic information systems are discussed.
