Abstract

Teachers of and about science at the precollege level, and their teachers at the college and university level, need to reexamine the geoscience content in their courses. Public ignorance about science in general, and about key concepts of the geological sciences, in particular, inhibits effective action on problems relating to environmental change, land utilization, hazard mitigation, construction safety, cost effectiveness, and many other areas that concern all citizens. We spend our lives on Earth's surface; appreciation of the awesome story behind almost any landscape is a legitimate part of our education. Do we properly prepare teachers for teaching by giving them a variation on an introductory course for majors? Do we properly prepare those citizens who may become doctors, lawyers, businesspeople, or politicians by teaching them the geologic time scale, mineral, rock, or fossil identification, or the nitty-gritty of plate tectonics?
