Abstract

Well into the 19th century, what we today call engineering was performed by craftspeople receiving their education through apprenticeship. Therefore, the engineering sciences are of comparatively recent origin. They have important metaphysical and epistemological characteristics that distinguish them from the natural sciences. For instance, they have a strong focus on the functional properties of human-made objects, and they have incorporated various forms of systematized action-guiding knowledge that does not have a basis in natural science. Therefore, the engineering sciences form a major branch of science, on a par, for instance, with natural, social, behavioral, and medical science.
