Abstract

A good examination contains representative coverage, is reliable, and is valid. Objective and essay examinations are compared on the basis of these criteria. Although it is easy to construct a superficial, ambiguous objective examination, a well-written one can have greater coverage, be more reliable, and be fully as valid as an essay examination. Some functions, such as the development of a number of steps leading to a conclusion, cannot be tested by objective examinations. Essay examinations are probably more effective as teaching devices. If accuracy of grading is desired, the objective examination is commonly superior.
