Abstract
ABSTRACTIn view of the declining number of students taking geography at A-level and the significance of this for schools, teachers and higher education, it is important to understand the reasons why students make particular subject choices at the age of 16. Previous research into subject choice at 16 is considered, but this article focuses on one case-study school, and specifically on students' reasons for choosing geography. It looks at the influence of GCSE results, teachers' advice and of coursework and fieldwork, and suggests factors teachers might consider when discussing subject choice with their own students.
