Abstract

It may seem odd to begin a review of three contemporary Canadian plays with comments on the nature of the 19th-century theatre, but the comparison implied, I feel, is revealing. For many years , theatre people - critics , writers, performers alike - turned a hostile eye on the popular theatre of th is period because it was believed to contain nothing but melodramas - the word itself was condemning unoriginal domestic dramas, silly farces and comedies . In light of the searing flashes of insight provided by playwrights from Ibsen on, these earlier works came to be considered worthless.
