Abstract
This paper begins by describing the policy initiatives and other events which have led to the current interest in factors which might influence the possible implementation of technology education as a subject in South African schools. It then goes on to outline the nature of the Natal Education Department’s pilot in Design and Technology and consider some of the issues that it seems to raise in respect of the wider implementation of technology education in South African schools. Finally it comments on some ways in which policy makers and planners might respond to these issues.
