Abstract

This is the third volume in the series What English Language Teachers Need to Know. Volume I focuses on ‘Understanding learning’ and Volume II on ‘Facilitating learning’ (see ELT Journal 67/1 for a review of Volumes I and II). As the other volumes, Volume III states that it is written for ‘pre-service teachers and teachers new to the field of ELT’ working at any teaching level and teaching in ‘an English-dominant country, a country where English is one of the official languages, or a country where English is taught as a foreign language’ (p. xviii). The authors also say that this volume ‘helps pre-service teachers, teachers new to the field, administrators and policy makers understand and work with the theory and practice of developing ELT curricula in a variety of contexts and for a variety of levels’ (p. xx). We see that the volume is intended to provide both theoretical and practical help in curriculum design to a wide range of people involved in ELT.
