Abstract

This chapter starts with the definition of Big Data in terms of four V’s, namely: Volume, Velocity, Variety and Veridicity. The chapter also presents the idea that Big Data problems could be approached in two different ways using either a “muscular” solution, that is implementing more powerful computing systems, or a “cerebral” solution in which we radically change our attitude towards data. This second approach, while indicating how to tackle the current problems, could also suggest new possibilities for future applications. The chapter also contains a description of Big Data as a new asset of firms due to their ability to generate value and concludes reviewing some of the many definitions of Big Data appearing in the literature.
