Abstract
Measurements of high pT mid‐rapidity η production in polarized and unpolarized proton‐proton collisions provide information about a number of quantities that are currently not well constrained by other measurements. Specifically, the double helicity asymmetry in high pT mid‐rapidity η meson production is sensitive to the gluon helicity distribution in a polarized proton. In order to relate the double helicity asymmetry for an inclusive single particle final state to a polarized parton distribution, the fragmentation functions must be known. Despite the relatively large production rate of the η meson and its ease of detection, an extraction of the η fragmentation functions has only been performed recently, aided by a measurement of the cross section for high pT mid‐rapidity η meson production in proton‐proton collisions.Measurements of the double helicity asymmetry and cross section for high pT mid‐rapidity η meson production at PHENIX as well as a first extraction of the η fragmentation functions from wor...
