Abstract

Summary Callus can be grown from hypertrophic tissue induced in the hypocotyl-root axis of germinating Welwitschia mirabilis embryos and grown successfully on Schenk's and Hildebrandt's (1972) basal medium supplemented with 0.1 and 0.3 mg l -1 kinetin and napthaleneacetic acid, respectively. Various permutations of auxin and cytokinin have thus far proved unsuccessful in either embryogenesis or organogenesis but a more structured callus was observed in discarded three-month-old cultures.
