Abstract

This chapter explores Wales’ multifaceted engagement with ecofeminism through a range of literary genres, including poetry (and ecopoetry), the short story and industrial fiction. As well as emphasizing the role of canon formation in Wales and the establishment of feminist and ecofeminist approaches within the academy, this chapter explores the impact of publishing (especially republishing out-of-print texts) in Wales. Focusing primarily on Welsh Writing in English, the chapter goes on to consider some key moments in the shift from rural to urban writing, the interplay between short fiction and travel writing, and the burgeoning field of dystopian Welsh writing by women. Finally, the chapter draws attention to the interplay between politics, activism and ecopoetry, arguing that poetry encompasses some of the most dynamic ecofeminist voices in modern Wales. Throughout, the chapter emphasizes the intersection between ecofeminism and marginalized voices and identities in Wales and how ecofeminist literature can be a catalyst for change.
