Abstract

The chairman, co-chairman and TPC chairman would like to welcome you to the first European Microwave Integrated Circuits conference: EuMIC 2006. This new conference has evolved from the highly successful and popular GAAS® symposia, which was first held in Rome in 1990 and chaired by our good friend professor Franco Giannini. These symposia were organised by the GAAS® Association and focussed on the very latest developments using Gallium Arsenide and other compound semiconductors. As well as being an excellent forum for state-of-theart presentations in these areas these symposia were also recognised as warm welcoming meetings that represented a community of friends. These symposia also looked to the future by strongly encouraging student attendance and providing a large number of generous student grants and prizes. In 1998 the GAAS® symposia joined together with the European Microwave Conference to form what we now know as the extremely successful European Microwave Week. At this time the GAAS® symposia was still organised wholly by the GAAS® Association and the rest of the week was organised by the European Microwave Association (EuMA), so there were some gaps and overlaps between the two conference organisers. This year the GAAS® Association and the European Microwave Association have worked together to produce this new conference, which maintains the excellent traditions and atmosphere of the former GAAS® symposia but was organised cohesively together with the other conferences within European Microwave Week. The name was chosen to show that this new conference will now focus on all monolithic microwave integrated circuits whether they are fabricated using silicon, silicon germanium, gallium arsenide, gallium nitride or any other semiconductor material.
