Abstract

An almost complete skeleton and another less complete but also articulated specimen of a fossil eagle ray from Oligocene deposits of the Frauenweiler clay pit (Baden Wurttemberg, Germany) is compared with skeletons of the extant speciesMyliobatis goodei Garman 1885,Pteromylaeus bovinus (E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire 1817), and the extinctPromyliobatis gazolae (de Zigno 1885) from the middle Eocene of Monte Bolca. Significant morphometric differences justify the erection of a new genus,Weissobatis. The descriptions ofMyliobatis serratus von Meyer 1843 andMyliobatis aquila var.oligocaena Leriche 1910 are based on tooth and caudal spine morphology. With these characters only it cannot be proven that these myliobatid species and both Frauenweiler specimens are conspecific, and therefore the latter are designated as a new genus and species,Weissobatis micklichi.
