Abstract
The various types of tool material are discussed in relation to properties required for effective performance. Tool wear is considered from a practical point of view (i.e. the influence of machining conditions on the form and magnitude of wear). Methods of reducing tool wear, such as surface treatment of cutting tools, application of cutting fluids and the effect of high and low temperature machining are reviewed.
