Abstract
The article describes the results of a research project at Siegen University, which addressed the alphabetization and basic education of young adults. Following the social civil code, alphabetization is defined as the possibility of cultural participation. This understanding of alphabetization shapes the conceptual design of the research project: Neither could it only focus on answering the questions of functional alphabetization nor on the acquisition of single abilities, skills and knowledge by students. The project rather strived to develop curricular solutions that should enable teenagers to understand the meaning of the learning process itself and to comprehend the relevance of learning processes for their personal development. Therefore, we developed and tested specific contents for learning processes which take into account the interests, experiences and ideas of the young adults: Media projects, dance theaters, exhibitions or regional-specific projects in different domains.
