Abstract

The volume and shape magnetostriction ω V ( H) and ω S ( H) of an Invar alloy and a technical constant-modulus alloy were measured with a strain gauge technique at room temperature. The considerable shape magnetostriction amounts to 0.1 of the volume effect. The itinerant model of ferromagnetism and Kanamori's formula for correlation effects is applied. The observed magnetostriction implies a deformation potential of about 0.3 eV.
