Abstract
By means of scanning tunneling microscopy we have been able to visualize in real-time and space dynamical processes on metal and semiconductor surfaces, such as the nucleation and growth of oxygen induced reconstructions on Cu surfaces. It is shown that although there are strong similarities in the final oxygen induced reconstructions, the growth modes are dramatically different, and that the information obtained from observations of dynamical processes may be crucial for a subsequent understanding of the static surface structure.
