Abstract

30 years ago, the newly discovered disease AIDS was spreading quickly and had a firm grip on the public imagination, but most people had a poor understanding of the causes and symptoms. Many people will remember the hard-hitting campaigns of the 1980s—John Hurt voicing a UK television advert about the spread of the disease still resonates for many people. Posters about HIV and AIDS—displayed in medical centres, nightclubs, bars, and elsewhere—were a vital source of public-health information.
