Abstract

ABSTRACT Services to the foreign language profession, ranging from work on local committees to national leadership, are performed almost exclusively by volunteers. Attitudes of some members of the profession toward their colleagues, ranging from indifference to callous rejection, pose afar greater threat to the future of the profession than any external forces. The trend to convert the energetic young professional into a burned‐out volunteer and “instant has‐been” must be reversed before the profession can be truly unified.
