Abstract

Much research on the subject of the victim's experience in court has focused on victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Women are much more likely to be victims of these crimes than are men. The court is one part of the criminal justice system that the victims may be part of. Prior to the 1990s, generally the victim did not participate, except as a witness, in court. Research on victims of domestic violence and sexual assault indicate that they are more willing to not drop the charges if they are actively involved in the process. Victim advocates and victim impact statements have become a very important part of the court that increases victims' satisfaction with the judicial process.
