Abstract

A method is presented by which the evaluation of the set of linear equations determining the local vibrations of defect lattices can be considerably simplified in the case of large imperfections. The treatment makes use of some theorems on partitioned matrices which permit the reduction in the matrix of these equations of the number of arising additional and encumbering terms, and the expression of these terms in a more convenient form for practical calculation. The method is illustrated in the case of five defect atoms in a two-dimensional lattice.
