Abstract

Raman and infrared reflection spectral studies of solutions of zinc oxide in potassium hydroxide (7.5 and 15m) with OH/ZnO ratios of from 8 to 16 show that the predominant species in these solutions possesses tetrahedral symmetry (Point Group Td) and is presumably the Zn(OH)42− ion. The frequencies and assignments, neglecting the hydrogen atoms, are: ν1(a1)=484 cm−1, ν2(e)=285 cm−1, ν3(f2)=430 cm−1, ν4(f2)=322 cm−1.
