Abstract

High resolution electron energy loss spectra (HREELS) were measured for H adsorption on Ru(10 1 0). Two different adsorption sites of C S symmetry are sequentially filled which are assigned to the two different threefold hollow sites in the Ru(10 1 0) unit cell. With decreasing coverage the FWHM of the vibrational mode (150 meV) normal to the surface increases from 10 to more than 20 meV. This observation is consistent with quantum motion at small coverages and a wide protonic band in the excited state. The strong decrease of the FWHM by a factor of two during temperature decrease from 90 to 20 K is unexplained so far.
